There are some tutorials that might help
For patterns use the search field to get the template you want. You can search the template title and tags (tags are what you see in the sidebar)
...and when search fails, there's a trick to combine any palette with any pattern
and the basics: ABSOLUTE BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO CL
