Its not possible to open a colourlovers pattern in illustrator. As GreenMyEyes was explaining, the only thing you download is the palette of the pattern - the colours in the pattern. Not the vector file of the pattern itself. You can see these colours if you look in the swatches palette in illustrator (Window > Swatches).
That is why when you open your download in illustrator, you see an empty page.
Its because the download does not contain the pattern, it only contains the colours of the pattern.
If you have a look at this link you will find instructions on how to download a "pattern tile" that you can use in photoshop.
