I'll admit I just used Wourdofmouse's image without thinking too much about it but after reading your comment I did a quick google. Apparently eggplant is a type of squash, thus eggplant and purple squash are two different names for the same vegetable so you're both right:)

Oh my Gourd!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well I certainly seemed to have set the cat amongst the pigeons with my horticultural shortcomings! - I do apologise...
I agree that eggplants (or Aubergines as they are called in these parts) are NOT squash - the question was really what was in the picture?
I searched specifically for 'purple squash' and did actually pause at the picture... it just doesn't look like the aubergines we get here as it's far TOO purple and more sinious in shape....the problem is there are many different kinds of aubergine and they don't all look the same...and there appears to be an even wider variety of shapes and colours for gourds / squash... courgettes (zucchini) are squash as are pumpkins but look nothing like each other whereas a gherkin looks like a courgette but is not a squash at all...
The trouble with image searches is they not only sometimes throw up images with wrongly attributed tags but they mean genuine errors get replicated across the internet.
Before I rename it though I'm going to double check for an actual variety of purple squash.
....image tagged as 'purple squash'
...little pale aubergines
.... and the aubergine as I know it!
...................Okay so it appears to be a picture of a variety of long aubergine called 'Ping Tung' and although there's a purple version of almost every vegetable you can think of I can't find a single variety of purple squash! :-(
