En la India la segunda de las diez reencarnaciones de Vishnu siempre ha estado bajo la forma de una tortuga llamada Kurma que prestó su ayuda a Indra para vencer a los demonios Asuras. Para llegar a esto, Vishnu sirvió de eje central para permitir a los dioses batir el Océano de los Orígenes donde nació el licor de la inmortalidad, el árbol del Paraíso, la medicina de los dioses, la diosa del vino, las ninfas, el caballo divino, elefante real, y muchas más maravillas… La misma escena está igualmente representada de manera magnífica sobre un bajorrelieve del templo de Angkor, en Camboya.
