Scotney Castle was originally a 12th century fortified manor house, founded by Lambert de Scoteni. In 1378, Roger de Ashburnham founded an irregular stone quadrangle castle, with an outer ward apparently in response to the threat of invasion by France. For 350 years Scotney Castle was the home of the Catholic Darell family.The circular Ashburnham Tower reflected in the castle moat is the only one of the four original towers left standing.
