I think I see what you're getting at, art -- but as a really big fan of the Rocket Ship, I have to submit that it's pure genius, no matter how you slice it! For me, the third colour ('nugatory') hovers like a third layer in the palette. Whereas I don't get quite the same feeling of floating from 'Wanalee' in Sphera.
Is there a term for this technique? If not, I think we need to coin one. They both remind me of 2 Magpies, where I was searching for a similar effect:
