How to Write the Perfect Artist Statement

When you are pursuing an art career, artist statement might easily be as important as your work itself. This is the first clue your audience will have about your art, the first sentences they will read in your portfolio, this statement represents your first handshake with a potential buyer or a gallery. To avoid falling into the sea of many artists who describe themselves in words no-one understands, here are some tips on how to write, or how to change the existing, art statement.

Keep it simple

Introduce yourself to the audience as if you were there in person. Write the statement in the same way you would actually talk to someone - bearing in mind that your conversation partner is neither completely uninformed, neither an academic you need to impress. Write your artist statement to reach a wide audience with your art and its meaning.

Explain why

Be personal. Explain why is creating this type of art important to you - what drives you, what inspires you, what moves you. Think about who is your influence or what is the cause your art serves to, what motivated you to create art in the first place.

The artist statement should also say HOW

Briefly explain the artistic process, the materials you used, and why were those your choice. If there are any special or innovative techniques you are using, you should also highlight how did you get that idea.

What does it mean to you

To write about yourself is a challenge, as you should expose a part of your intimate, personal life. However, by being confidential, you are inviting the audience in, and thus creating an open space for dialogue. People will feel like they know you and can connect to you better. With this, you are letting them experience your art as a part of you, which gets you long term engagement. Writing about yourself in a short frame is for sure difficult, so try to make it fit into two, three sentences tops - as if you were writing a post on Twitter.

write artist statement

Try to make it short

You will not keep anybody's attention with a long, complicated artist statement. People nowadays take information in small cups, and so you should give them everything you want them to know about you in a short, concise text. Don't use long, complex words, which make your sentences difficult to understand - if a reader needs a few goes before he/she can understand you, they won't bother to read it.  Be clear for a very broad audience.

Essential

When writing your statement, you will have many versions in the process. Explain what you are doing to yourself, and then cut your text to remove all the unnecessary moments. For example, instead of saying "I intend to..." or "I am trying to...", just say the essence of what it is about. It will make your statement shorter, and much clearer and focused.

Have different statements for different projects

One artist statement is often not sufficient to explain your work as a whole. For one, you are always changing and transforming, innovating and addressing different challenges. Make an artist statement for every project, exhibition, performance, sculpture. Let each statement explain what was the purpose of the art piece, and focus on your position as an artist in the moment of creation. Someday, a historian could analyze your work by tracking your statements connected to the projects you did over the years.

Don't navigate

There is no need to point out what is the highlight of your work. The viewer will have the chance to experience your art in his/her own way, not the way you want them to. That is the whole beauty of experiencing art - your statement should intrigue them, and then give them the freedom to have their own interpretations.

It's about your work

The artist statement is not your biography, so don't get carried away to write about yourself too much. The focus should be your work, and your vision.

Review

When you are done with your statement, send it to your friends! Let other people read it, and give you their comments and feedback. They will tell you if the language was clear, and if it describes your art well. Have other fellow artists review your writing, and tell you their impressions. Pay attention not to make any careless mistakes - your spelling and grammar have to be perfect, the context clear and precise, understandable for everyone. Sometimes it's also good to write your statement, and then leave it be for a few days. Later on, you might have a different insight into how your sentences are structured. Rome isn't built in a day.

A Color Palette For Every Vibe

Deciding on a color palette which fits your mood is like choosing the right playlist for the day. Colourlovers are explorers who discover new palettes for every occasion, matching perfect shades with perfect tones, for the blues and the jazz of a perfect day.

We came across a list of palettes by Reux Design Co, their top picks for five different ambiances.

  1. Soft, Romantic, Organic

If you are feeling poetic, full of care and tenderness, this delicate flower which is created with this choice of colors can make your day even more romantic. This palette fits vagabond souls, nature-loving and free spirits, it is a spontaneous yet gentle combination. Every shade is a soft pick, but put together they are a perfect fit for dreamers and love birds.

2. Strong, Masculine, Clean

Black and white are always giving a strong impression, like a good cup of coffee in the morning. This combination is exuding simplicity and clear rationalist view. Strong blue and green are empowering this simple base and giving the "muscles" to your combination.

3. Bright, Cheerful, Fun

Now, this palette is like riding a roller coaster. It has everything you need for a bright sunny day - the gray is a firm base for the cheery shades of blue and red, not too strong but not subtle either. Smooth shades of orange and yellow are adding the sweetness, playfulness, and goofiness to the combination. Almost if you can taste the lollypop, sugar melting in your mouth, just from looking at these shades full of flavor.

4. Luxurious, Thoughtful, Mature

Sophisticated color palettes never get old. Everybody has a moment when they need one - like a royal outfit combination to make us come across as more mature and serious. This choice, however, doesn't have any haughty statements but offers a wiser point of view, full of understanding.  These colors remind us to appreciate life and the knowledge that comes with time.

5. Girly, Rich, Bold

This brave color composition is contained of very strong, juicy shades, on a dirty white base. Even though it appears playful, nothing about this palette is innocent. The purple shade is the most tricky one - one thing is to be brave, and another not to know if we can pull something off. This blend is both feminine and masculine at the same time, which is its true wealth.

Interview questions every artist should be prepared for

Important jumps in every artist's career are being featured in art magazines. These opportunities are always both amazing and scary, which is why it is important to prepare for the interview properly. You will want to make sure that you leave a good impression and that your art statement comes across. To get ready and become more confident, we suggest that you answer these questions yourselves before you get a chance to talk about your art with a journalist. These are some of the most common questions artists get asked in an interview, and they can also help you have a better and clearer statement for your art.

What does your work aim to say?

Now, even though you have a full grasp on what is your work about, it is very important for others to have the wide context as well. In answering this question, think not only about what inspires you but how are you personally reflecting on the matter, thus why does it bring a burning urge to create your work. Think about the materials you are using and how do they fit in the concept of your artwork, and then the narrative of your work and what kind of dialogue it should inspire. Formulate your answer in a clear manner, but leave it open for additional interests and further questions on the topic.

Who are your biggest influences?

Whether it is one particular artist whose work inspired you to become an artist yourself, or if there is a variety of artists which influenced your style, your theme, your expression - your answer to this question is important because it will help the audience locate you on the big canvas of different creators. Most importantly, this will help curators, critics and collectors recognize you as an artist they should pay attention to. If your influences are your current colleagues from the world of art, you can also show your respect for their work, and elaborate on what aspect of that work you are inspired by, and why.

How does your work comment on current issues on a national/global level?

Throughout history, art has played a valuable role in shaping our societies. If your work is making a comment on current political/ social/ ecological happenings, then you have a chance to enter a worldwide artistic dialogue and be recognized on a large scale. Think about how your artwork fits into the great puzzle and how are your pieces expressing your personal viewpoints. Smart and prepared answer to this question can ensure you high rates in the art world and help you grow your network.

What is your background?

The purpose of this question is not to highlight your education and achievements in your career. Although this is a part of your answer, the main focus of your story should be reflecting on your personal growth, your cultural heritage and those life events which inspired your work. Readers would like to know more about you as a person behind your art, what set of events shaped you and played an important role in your artistic development, how is your cultural identity tied with the work you've shown so far. This question also opens a possibility for a short glimpse into your future plans and what is your current work in progress inspired by.

Which current art world trends are you following?

To be a respected artist, with good sale rates, you'll have to keep track of the hot topics on the current art scene on a local, national and international level. During your interview, you will have the chance to show your awareness of the waves and flows of the market, the trends in the art that is being made by your colleagues, as well as art-buying trends. You can express your deep, philosophical understanding of the phenomena in today's art, your clever predictions on the further interests of the market and reflect on famous contemporary artists and the public interest in their work.

By coming prepared to an interview, you are showing your respect towards the time of the person on the receiving end. Knowing what you will talk about in advance, means that you will appear more confident and avoid reckless mistakes which can hurt your career in the long run.

Art interview doesn't need to be a date in your calendar which you dread, it can be an awesome opportunity to share your calling with the world. This way, the audience is given the chance to meet the person behind the canvas, and relate to your art on a deeper, intimate level, with a better understanding of the statement you are expressing.

Are you prepared for your next interview? We hope this helped you prepare and lose the jitters. Fingers crossed!

Did The Simpsons Predicts Pantone’s Color of the Year?

simpsons

The Pantone Color of the Year is a calendar event that every designer keeps an eye on. Starting in 2000, the Color of the Year is as straightforward as it sounds. However, are there more nefarious forces at play? The team at Aspire Doors noticed something that may have just blown Pantone’s cover wide open. Kind of…

Before we get into their discovery, let’s discuss the Pantone Color of the Year and its significance…

What is the Pantone Color of the Year?

Pantone was founded in 1962 for the purpose of creating colour cards that would be used by cosmetics companies. The following year they changed course with their colour matching system otherwise known as PMS (Pantone Matching System). What this does is create a catalogue of all colours that can then be used around the world with consistency.

Having consistent colours is crucial for your branding or any other design project and with so many possible colours out there, it became necessary to standardise and quantify colour. Without being able to find and use a colour consistently, design projects would increase massively in logistics and time wasted.

In 2000, they launched the Colour of the Year and it has since made Pantone the global authority on colour. They have moved with the times as well. Before the internet, Pantone would provide solid colour ink printed on paper. They now work in CMYK as well as RGB and have documented and numbered thousands of solid colours for you to use in your web design projects.

How is the Pantone Colour of the Year Decided?

This is where Aspire Door’s discovery comes in. The COTY is supposed to represent the socio-economic conditions of the time and is decided by a number of different colour representatives around the world. They meet in secret to discuss and debate what it should be.

Taking pointers from fashion, art, politics, packaging, branding, film, travel destinations and more, they decide on a hue that best represents that year. Or do they?

The Simpsons-Pantone Connection

Here’s where the truth may lie. Since 2010, the Pantone Color of the Year can be observed in the living room of one of TV’s most famous families, The Simpsons.

As this post from Aspire Doors demonstrates, the 2019 Color of the Year ‘Living Coral’ matches the Simpsons’ skirting boards and thus completes the set from 2010 to 2019. 2013’s COTY ‘Emerald’ matches the carpet, the walls match the 2016 COTY, every part from the magazine rack to the rug can be linked to the Pantone Color of the Year.

Is this proof that Pantone gave up in 2010 and are just pointing to a different part of the Simpsons living room each year? We doubt it, but the coincidence definitely raises an eyebrow.

The Simpsons Future Predictions

This can be categorised as one of many future predictions that The Simpsons have got right. When Donald Trump ascended to the presidency in 2016, viewers remembered the 1998 episode ‘Bart to the Future’ where Donald Trump becomes president. Even the campaign posters were almost identical apart from the slogan. The Simpsons thought he’d opt for ‘America, you can be my ex-wife!’ instead of ‘Make America Great Again’.

This is just one prediction in a long list, from Las Vegas circus tiger attacks to the mass hysteria of the Higgs Boson particle; The Simpsons have had an uncanny ability to see into the future. So, are the writers time travellers?

Probably not.

The truth is, the Simpsons have been going for so long and the world around them has always informed their jokes. In 30 years of writing jokes based on current affairs, some of those scenarios are bound to come true. After all, Donald Trump expressed interest in running for the presidency as early as 1988, a whole decade before the ‘Bart to the Future’ episode and a year before the Simpsons’ first episode in 1989.

‘The Simpsons Did It Already’ is an online meme that is testament to this fact. In 30 years of the Simpsons, they’ve covered so much ground that so many hypothetical situations have already been explored by their writers. It’s made it really hard to come up with ideas for your own TV show, because pretty much anything you can think of has already been done by Matt Groening et al. So, there’s no need to believe in time travel just yet.

Vintage Jewelry - The Ultimate Present for Your Wife’s Birthday

So, it’s that time of the year again – your wife’s birthday is coming up and you are looking for the best way to express your love for her. A million ideas run through your mind and you just can’t decide on the perfect gift to sweep her off her feet.

For any man out there, this can be a stressful situation – wanting so hard to make your woman feel special on her day but not knowing what to get her. You may have considered jewelry as an option because well, which woman doesn’t love jewelry? But not just any jewelry; we are talking about something different and unique – vintage jewelry. Just like many other past fashion trends, vintage jewelry is making a major comeback.

vintage jewelry

Rich in style and history, vintage jewelry is timeless.  Not only does it look stunning, but it also has the power to take you back in time. Every vintage piece is a powerful style statement with a story behind it.

Vintage Style: What’s the Appeal

Since vintage jewelry comes in a variety of styles and shapes belonging to different eras, there is plenty to choose from. Whether you are looking for a beautifully hand-crafted bracelet or an elegant set of crystal earrings, you are sure to surprise your lady love with your choice. There are so many reasons why you can never go wrong with a vintage piece.

Vintage Is Unique

In today’s era of mass production and standardization, it becomes difficult to find jewelry that is unique in its design and appearance. With contemporary jewelry, you are likely to find the same or very similar designs wherever you look.

In the past, jewelry making was a different affair – each piece was beautifully handcrafted providing a lot of attention to detail. You will find each piece of vintage jewelry different from the other.

If your wife is someone who loves originality and standing out from the crowd, a vintage piece is sure to be a valuable addition to her jewelry collection!

Vintage is of Better Quality

If we carefully inspect a vintage piece, we often find that it looks as good as new despite being made years ago. This is because vintage jewelry is often handmade, with each piece carefully crafted to last for years to come.

You can see the amount of time and effort that has gone into getting every tiny detail just right. With a decline in the quality of materials available and a change in crafting techniques, very few manufacturers today can match the quality of an antique piece.

Vintage Jewelry Has a Story to Tell

If your wife is someone with an interest for everything historical, she is going to love owning vintage jewelry. Every vintage piece takes you back in time to a different era and tells stories of the past. This is what makes this jewelry a lot more valuable than modern varieties.

Vintage Doesn’t Cost an Arm and A Leg

Some people may have the misconception that vintage jewelry costs more than its contemporary counterparts. Despite its growing popularity, there are many affordable options and with a bit of research, it is possible to find good value for money.

Buying online is a great option as you can take your time going over the options and find excellent deals by comparing prices of different vendors. So no more sleepless nights when deciding to buy your queen an exquisite birthday present.

vintage jewelry

Vintage is Trendy

In the hustle and bustle of the world that we live in today, we are gradually finding ourselves returning to our roots and cherishing the beauty and simplicity of the good old days. This applies to jewelry too!

Vintage never goes out of style; it is always eye-catching and helps one stand out from the crowd whether it is worn at a party or on the red carpet. Your lady is sure to turn a few heads while flaunting her vintage jewelry and she will love you for it!

There’s Plenty of Choice

When buying vintage jewelry, there is so much choice that you are sure to find a piece that your wife will instantly fall in love with. A beautiful vintage ring featuring diamonds or stones is something that any woman would love to wear on a daily basis as a symbol of her man’s love.

Choose from designs of the Georgian era that come with simple yet elegant floral designs or if you are after something more artsy, perhaps something from the Art Deco era will be more suitable.

If your wife loves pearls, the classic pearl necklace – Pearls of Joy – is a fashion staple any woman would love to own as it’s the perfect accessory to add a touch of class and elegance to any outfit.

Pendants are another great option – they are simple yet chic and definitely very much in style. A beautiful pair of earrings or a bracelet can also be bought depending on your wife’s preferences. Pay special attention to the kind of jewelry she usually wears so that you can buy something in line with her personal style.

vintage jewelry

At the end of the day, a good birthday present for your lady is one she will remember and cherish for years to come. It is for this very reason that vintage jewelry is the ultimate present for the most special woman in your life on her birthday.

No woman will be disappointed receiving a stunning piece of jewelry carefully selected by the man she loves. It is timeless – a good piece of jewelry will be of value now and forever. And the best thing is, there is a style to suit every personality. Whether your wife is a minimalist or someone who loves making bold fashion statements, you are sure to find a piece that will make her feel loved on her big day!

How to Plan a Fairy Tale Wedding

fairy tale wedding

Once Upon A Time…

A little girl dreams of meeting prince charming, being whisked away on a white horse (or unicorn), and having the perfect fairy tale wedding. As she grows older, the reality of adult life can make her more cynical about these golden fantasies. Fortunately, with careful consideration, a healthy dose of planning, and a sprinkle of fairy dust, the bride-to-be can still have the fairy tale wedding that she deserves…

What Does Magic Mean to You?

When we think of fairy tale weddings, perhaps the first image that comes to mind is of a Disney prince and princess being wed in a grandiose castle. That’s all well and good; however, people of royalty aren’t the only characters in Disney films to get married. Consider Robin Hood & Maid Marian in Robin Hood, Carl & Ellie in Up, Mulan & Shang in Mulan, or even Pongo & Perdita in One Hundred and One Dalmatians. The point is: you don’t need to come from a royal family, or possess kingly amounts of wealth, to have a fairy tale wedding.

The concept of a fairy tale wedding was introduced to the world by Disney films, where we also find talking furniture, singing animals, and impromptu musicals. This concept has since gone on to make crazy amounts of money for the wedding industry. So, you have to ask, what does it mean to you to have a fairy tale wedding?

It’s not so much the surface level things that make your big day magical; its how you feel about everything that’s important, which is determined by the people who help you celebrate this momentous occasion, and the vibe you create, whatever your budget is. Forget about what someone else’s vision of a fairy tale wedding is – what’s yours? What would make your day magical?

Identify what would truly make for a fulfilling wedding, and then you can plan your perfect day accordingly, whether that’s with white horses and a multi-tiered cake in a castle, or a disco and a BBQ in your back garden.

Castles in the Sky

Not everyone can afford to hire a castle or a palace to get married in. However, there are plenty of more affordable venues, like stately homes, hotels, or ballrooms that can just as powerfully evoke your inner princess. Ballrooms tend to possess impressive architecture, complete with chandeliers and beautiful curtains.

Then there’s the option of foregoing buildings altogether; how about getting married in a forest? Outdoor weddings can be a beautiful alternative, and tying the knot in a natural landscape full of trees creates a different kind of fairy tale magic. This can be coupled with large marquees for the wedding reception and portable food stalls for the catering to create a unique and memorable alfresco wedding experience.

You can also save money by booking cheap or free venues for your wedding reception, such as having it at the house of a relative or close friend, in a local park, or on the beach.

An Invitation to the Magic

With personalised wedding invitations you can ensure the magic begins long before your guests reach the venue. Entice guests into your fairy tale fantasy with a beautiful design that reflects your unique style and gives them an insight into the kind of vibe to expect on the day. Just imagine how delighted you’d be to receive such a lovely invitation delivered through your letterbox.

Sprinkle a Little Magic

Wherever the ceremony is held, it’s the small details that can transform your normal wedding venue into a fairy tale-come-true, as if by magic. Using inexpensive fabrics as drapery is a beautiful way to decorate your venue, and can be used to cover tables, walls, and any other surface that feels too bare. The use of ribbons is another great way to add a visual touch of class.

The lighting is also important. Having the place decorated in fairy lights looks beautiful and doesn’t cost much. When night falls, using candles in candelabras is a classier alternative to electronic lighting and creates a more romantic atmosphere. Then you have the centrepieces on the tables, which can be elaborate and beautiful without breaking the bank.

fairy tale wedding

Fairy Tale Flowers

Of course, flower arrangements are an absolute must, and add a touch of natural magic to any room. Typical fairy tale flowers are roses, peonies or hydrangeas, which can be arranged in colourful bouquets. Alternatively, using just one kind and colour of flower can be visually striking, and white flowers in particular evoke a sense of purity and magic. Using trees to adorn the aisle adds a sense of the fantastical as the bride walks among them on her way to tie the knot.

Dressed for the Part

No fairy tale wedding would be complete without the dress. What constitutes a magical look will of course differ between each bride-to-be. It could be an incredibly sparkly and attention-grabbing affair, along with velvet gloves and loud jewellery, or something much more understated, perhaps adorned with a tiara and a choker. It all depends on your tastes.

Once the bride’s outfit has been meticulously designed, then all the royal subjects need to look the part too. The outfits of your bridesmaids and pageboys all deserve careful consideration, and the style of their clothing should complement the style of the overall event.

Here Comes the Bride

One of the most important parts of the whole day that should be injected with fairy tale magic is the bride’s entrance. There are many ways you can make it stand out; the use of dramatic music, or even better, live music, can make this special moment all the more emotional, as well as having bridesmaids scatter rose petals around the bride as she enters.

And They Lived Happily Ever After…

A fairy tale wedding may seem like something that’s exclusive to your most cherished dreams, but with planning and action, you can turn those dreams a beautiful reality.

However, you mustn’t let the lure of ‘buy more to save more’ tempt you as you’ll have to sell more portraits to make a profit. So, ensure you carefully plan how many portraits you can realistically produce in a three-month period initially, and only buy the materials required to cover this output.

Offer More to Earn More

When you’re starting out in the custom portrait business, it can be tempting to offer customers portraits in standard sizes and formats to keep your costs down. However, customized goods are typically given as gifts, and this presents a great opportunity when you’re keen to get your business off the ground. By offering portrait cards, gifts, gift wrapping, colorful frames, and the option of adding a personalized message to your portrait, your business will stand out from the rest. Of course, this will increase your initial expenses. So, when you’re considering your business costs, you may need to borrow more capital in order to earn more income.

Be Accessible

Customers are prepared to pay high for personalized portraits as a unique and fully customizable design is something you can’t put a price on. But when consumers are sending you images, color swatches, and specific requests, they expect to be able to contact you as and when they need to. It’s, therefore, crucial that you have multiple methods available for them to contact you on. If you’ve met up face to face, handing out a business card is wise, whereas, being active on social media, having an easy-to-use contact form on your website, and an email address is crucial. By providing a good first-time experience, you’re much more likely to get repeat custom, positive reviews, and referrals.

Launching a personal portrait business takes a lot of enthusiasm and investment. But, by being smart with the way you launch your new venture, you can keep costings to a minimum while growing your business at the same time.

The Most Effective Ways to Make Your Photos Popular

As far back as 2014, an annual internet trends report, published by Mary Meeker, made the astounding claim that 1.8 million digital images were being uploaded onto the internet on a daily basis. Look around you and you will agree that this is a plausible number. With the proliferation of mobile devices that have cameras, everybody has become a photographer. For anyone building a photography portfolio, the number of images around can be a predicament. How do you ensure that the images you take are seen and become popular?

Here are some suggestions on the most effective ways of ensuring that your photos become popular.

Identify your audience

Treat photos as would any other content; create them for a particular audience. Anyone creating content and believing that it would appeal to everybody will fail. Start by determining who you would want to see your photos. Once you are clear about this, determine the kind of photographs these people would want to see and give it to them.

Attempting to create images for a particular audience leads to an important question: how do you know what your audience wants? Research the audience and collect data. With the internet, it has become easy to collect data about the kind of things a particular group of people is interested in.

Follow Search Engine Optimization principles

When many photographers hear about search engine optimization (SEO), they often think that it’s only suitable for written content. This is a misconception because search engines also rank images. Hence, to ensure that your images rank higher on search engines and are seen, you have to use image optimization.

To ensure image optimization, include some relevant text explaining what is happening on the image. If your image is appealing and connected to a topic of interest, it might make sense to the person who looks at it. If it leaves a good impression on someone, they will probably share it. When an image is shared, it is likely to be seen by more people.

To help you understand how to optimize an image, look at the image below.

One of the most important aspects of image optimization is alt text (or alt tag). This is a description you add so that if the image is not available to the visitor for any reason, they would know what is on the images. An example of such reasons would include a person who has turned off images. It is also useful for visually impaired persons using a screen reader.

The following suggestions will help you optimize the image above.

  • Select the right name for your file. Images usually have names that don’t help the reader understand what is on the image such as Nokia555444.jpg. For the above image, you would have something like, trendy-modern-wedding-attire.jpg.
  • Mention photo´s credits if you know it.
  • Ensure the image size is reduced so that it doesn’t take too long to display. In most cases, everything in between 1200 and 700 pixels is fine. We used 800 pixels on the longer side.
  • Make sure the image is responsive (i.e. can display on different devices).
  • Check on PageSpeed Insights whether your webpage loads as fast as before.
  • Compress the image so that it is stored as a small file size if you need it.
  • Caption all images so that people who scan your article will get an idea of what is in the image.

Create value

When people search the internet, they are usually looking for solutions to the challenges they are meeting. If your images create value and help people solve challenges, they are likely to appeal to an audience.

Creating value means making a decision regarding what people would use your image for. For instance, do you intend that people would use your photos as wallpapers? Then you may want to look at what people usually look for when they select wallpapers. The same would apply if you are taking photos that you want people to use for educational purposes.  It is important to inform your audience what you think the photos would be more suitable for.

One of the most effective and scalable methods of getting anything good to go viral nowadays is social media. However, if you are going to use social media, it is important that you ensure your images are the highest quality and they are relevant for your audience.

The mistake that many photographers make is not to clearly request people to share the images they post. Many people will do nothing if they have not been asked.

When posting your images on social media, start by doing your research to determine the time when most of your images are likely to be seen by those you are targeting. You don’t have to have the resources to collect this information, some analytics specialists have probably got the information somewhere. All you need to do is to search for it.

If you follow the advice above, if you are willing to research, and if you understand that there is no magic in getting your photos popular but hard work, you will soon reap the fruit of your labor.

What A Digital Marketing Agency Can Advise Your Company When Choosing Colors

choosing colors

Colors ignite different types of emotions. Depending on which kind of feeling you plan to entice, colors are useful techniques in reaching out to your audience. Getting customers’ attention can be a challenge, but you can be more effective in this endeavor by using color theory. Many web marketing agencies, like webmarketing123, advise companies to use the right color combinations to provoke a specific response or behavior from their audience. Companies also apply color theory when it comes to their branding or logos.

Here’s some more advice for your company when choosing the right colors:

  1. Know your audience and your competition

Before anything else, you should know your target audience. It is essential that you fully understand the demographics and psychographics. Knowing which demographic your products serve can point you to the right colors you can use for marketing. For instance, if your audience is mostly comprised of females, you will be more inclined to use colors that appeal to the feminine psyche.

Benchmarking, too, may help you get an idea on how you are going to present your brand. Observe and examine your competitors’ logos, websites, and color schemes. Knowing about the competition will give you an edge not only by letting you stand out among them, but by letting you avoid copying what might already be an existing design.

choosing colors

  1. Know the psychological effects of colors

Think psychologically and know the facts of your chosen colors to your audience. Try to put yourself in your customers’ shoes. Try to comprehend how they will see the meaning behind your selected colors, or their initial reactions with the colors.

Know what kind of face your company is going to wear. In business, your brand’s personality will identify you among the crowd, helping you create a place in the market. This is how people will find you because the market usually gravitates with brand identities that they feel are similar or could relate to them.

These are some of the personalities related to colors, which can help you identify yours:

  • Red for passion, anger, vigor, speed
  • Orange for fun, liveliness, energy
  • Yellow for friendliness, youth, and cheer
  • Green for nature, refreshment, growth
  • Blue for knowledge, peace, security, trust
  • Purple for royalty, wisdom, authority
  • Pink for nurture, warmth, softness
  • Brown for reliability and toughness
  • White for purity, virtue, cleanliness
  • Black for formality, luxury, secrecy
  • Gray for impartiality, compromise, maturity, composure

  1. Be direct and intentional in your approach

In choosing the right colors to represent you, being direct and deliberate in your approach is the best strategy. Choose your base, accent, and background wisely. These will function as initial calls to action throughout your site.

  • Choosing your base

Choosing the right color as your base is a vital role in building your brand identity. Your base color should match with your brand’s personality as mentioned above. That way, it is much easier for your brand to reach its target audience and attract their attention.

  • Choosing your accent

The second thing you need to consider after accomplishing your base is the accent. This can be the most delicate part. It is imperative for your accent to match up not just with your brand’s personality but even with your chosen base. Furthermore, it should never overlook its impact on the audience.

  • Choosing your neutral

The neutral color will serve as your background. Hence, try to look for a color that does not attract too much attention. Commonly, colors used as neutrals are white, gray, beige and its variations.

Black can be used as a neutral color, too; however, it needs careful attention. Black as a background can be inflexible and only works with specified colors, mainly white. Furthermore, having white text on a black background may slow down people’s reading speed because it’s not the format that most are used to.

  1. Stand out

Don’t be afraid to set your brand apart and be different. The goal is to be different and to stand out but in a good way.

Here are some examples of companies that brilliantly differentiated themselves:

  • Cadbury

Cadbury uses purple as its product’s primary color. It unlikely for a chocolatier to use such unique and random color. Commonly, when it is chocolate, warm colors such as brown or red best suit with it. However, Cadbury decided to stand out and utilize the color to bring their product into the pedestal.

  • UPS (United States Postal Service)

This logistics company used the color brown as their brand color. In 1916, where the color brown is much perceived as an epitome of luxury, it is a very unfavorable choice. However, UPS proved everyone wrong and used color brown to evoke simplicity and honesty.

  • Veuve Clicquot

Yellow for the color of expensive champagne is so unlikely and intriguing. Yellow, which signifies friendliness, youth, and cheer, do not typically match to a champagne product in the general view. Regardless of how people perceive it, Veuve Clicquot just made a visual innovation to promote their brand further.

The Bottom Line

There is no shortcut in the process of finding the right colors. There is no right or wrong way either. It may sound daunting, but it can also be enticing. Don’t be afraid to try out different things and to follow your gut feeling. The primary purpose of using colors is to convey the right emotions, thus never neglect your own.
