The Poppy Field

What wonderful pulls from this painting. It reminds me of eating ice cream sandwiches on the back porch of a dilapidated house. The house had sink holes forming around it and the paint was so think on the railings and peeling away in palpable chunks. This house was also surrounded by broken slate sidewalks, and these sidewalks where all lifted randomly by tree roots, so nearly each step would be to a different height on certain blocks. Above all, I remember a particular smell there, and the orange here reminds me of that. I wish I could accurately describe it, but it's something about the attic in that house. It's not just an old and dusty smell, but I think the smell that comes with bats living there, too, and with antiques, and the strange ceiling material.
