Schiele's 4 Trees

Thank you, Nina! He sounds like an interesting (and probably troubled) soul. I sometimes wonder if artistry is a gift that has a price that is too high. I did Google his art and was disturbed by several of his self-portraits. Then I found the 4 Trees, and just stared at it for a while. So pretty.Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. :)

oops - didn't tell you about the painting; Four Trees (1917). The melancholy colors, and "tormented" lines are said to have been influenced by his time served in the military during WW I.
His landscapes are gorgeous, but a lot of his work is disturbing and provocative -- very very emotional paintings

Yes, Egon Schiele, and he's one of my favorite artists! He was from Vienna and died in 1918 at the age of 28 of Spanish Influenza (his wife died 3 days before him). Fortunately, he was incredibly prolific and left a significant body of work behind. He was a co-founder of the Neukunstgruppe -- New Art Group -- and their artistic movement, Austrian Expressionism, greatly influenced literature as well as art. It's incredible that someone had such a cultural impact at such a young age and in such a short amount of time.

Until a couple of years ago, I worked in NYC and was able to see his work in the Neue Galerie. Incredible! If you ever get a chance to go, you absolutely should! It's part of their permanent collection and you will not be disappointed!!
