Reporting Spammers

Hello there helper bees,

It has come to the attention of many of us that spammers such as this are popping up everywhere on CL, polluting our creativity with palettes that are no more than blatant advertising. I imagine that the speed at which they reoccur makes identifying and removing them a bit of a nightmare for you guys so I was wondering, would it help if there was some sort of a "report spam" button on palette or profile pages? It's such a shame we even have to have this conversation but it would be an even greater shame if they were to ruin our beautiful community colour garden with their noxious weeds.

Any feedback on this issue would be very much appreciated.

Thanks for all you do,
Luna.
Sorry Luna I had to delete my posts it is obvious no one else could be bothered to even read the thread. Best to you
Sky
Plenty of people have read the thread, I'm sure. But spamming the advertisement palettes with messages about spamming isn't helping the issue, either.
By the way, Luna, I fully back your idea to have a "report spam" button on palettes and profiles. ♥
It's such a conundrum, how to expose the spammers without giving more attention to the advertisements themselves. Something needs to be done but I'm at a loss as to what would be most effective. I know from my own blog that getting rid of spam can be an absolute nightmare to keep on top of and I don't envy the mods their job on this one.
I think I reported, like, 42 spams around 10:30pm this evening.
I usually just send a message to CL via the contact page but I agree ~ it would be a lot easier to have a report as spam button pn palettes and profiles.
over at Libraything they have a REPORT option that allows you to flag Spam and other issues not relevent to this site but we could do woth a 'porn flag' for images and users uploading them) they are then voted as agreed/disagreed by other members and if they go a set threshold they are automatically removed.... they may be viewed by Librarything admin first but I guess at least it would cut the list down some for them and help weed out spurious attempts at censorship or malicious flagging.

actually thay have a site voting system for a lot of things which relies on threshold figures to activate and they also show 'helper badges' on profile badges for anyone contributing to site maintainance...

Just a thought?
I don't think that is the obvious conclusion.. people may already be reporting (and also thinking they are only one doing it) or may have just read your comments on how to report and gotten on with it.

Not everyone visits the forums, I don't usually, and depending on what you are doing onsite you don't necessarily see the spam (or porn!)

You quoted a figure of about 10% of palettes now being spam but I don't see anywhere near that many (I'm not saying thay are not there - just that whatever it is I am doing on site I don't bump in to them so much)

I would probably have missed all the porn if pamnsc777 hadn't mailed me to complain about it and provided the links.

So please do not assume nobody else can be bothered.

I have to say I haven't encountered any of this stuff, either. I wonder if it occurs primarily at certain times of day. It would certainly ruin my experience of the site if I had to wade through that kind of posting, but so far that hasn't been the case. I wouldn't even be aware of it if it weren't for the forum, and even now that I am, it still isn't showing up in my activities here.

I'd vote, too, for the report spam button, so these folks wouldn't have the opportunity to waste a lot of people's time. Beyond that, how about starving them with lack of attention?
Theoretically, ignoring them is the most logical option as the spammers should subsequently view their endeavours as unproductive and go elsewhere. They keep popping up time and time again though and honestly, has anyone ever taken the bait? Surely people are too cluey now days to be sucked in by this crap. Makes no sense to me. Anyway, yes, a button please (and thanks for the comments everyone:)
Totally agree with the ignoring part. I hardly come across one of them, their palettes are usually unattractive so the chances of clicking one of them are low and when I do click, I just ignore the description. It doesn't interfere with our activities on CLs (unless they're the spamming type), giving them attention will just make them linger.

However, the spam report button is brilliant, especially for those who exceed the limits. I've been waiting for it since I joined. They should, also, make one to report copies.
There were hardly any today. I know that calling them out publicly was not a popular idea with some people. But If it got other people to report them too that may be why there are significantly less today.

But they are not all gone. Here is one just posted a moment ago. June 27 1014

Thank you for also reporting them. That's the only thing than makes sense and the only thing that will help . Ignoring them accomplishes NOTHING.

The suggestion of report SPAM button is a wonderful idea. It would be most useful.
Popular or not, I will ugly up any spam that I encounter. I don't do it to annoy anyone with the exception of the spammer. I figure if every time they visit their advertisement they see a great big SPAM sign on it they may be discouraged.

As for those that say these people are not harming anything, think of the colors they claim and the band width they consume. There are countless ways to advertise a product or service for a fee. If they are going to advertise they should pay for it,

A report spam button is a great idea.
Ignoring them may not accomplish anything(apart from avoiding getting worked up over minor things) but it's naive to think that it can be stopped. Most of them are bots so they'll keep coming. A common thing between them is that they create an account post a couple of comments/palettes and leave for good or make another account, so reporting and getting their accounts closed won't do much as they probably wouldn't come back anyway.. Also, I don't think they(the human minority) would care about the messages posted on their profile because they are not here to bond.

Ignoring them doesn't mean we don't care, just that we have a different view of the situation or don't have time run behind them but if someone wants to do it it's great, we all agree they are annoying. What I don't like is fighting spam with spam. It's not nice, either, to come here and find messages all over the place. It only spreads negativity.
That's just my point of view.
Yeah. Not wasting any more of my time trying to explain this.
