I've seen some really pretty block-blends, but I (being fairly new to CL) have no idea how to make them. Any tips?

I think the most useful tool for block blends is http://pourpre.com/chromograf/en/. There is a conversation/game at Block Blends that has lots of really great blends and the instructions for that site on the first page.

I am a big fan of Color Impact and used it in my practice extensively. I think a license is still only $40 US. One of the tools I used most was the color blender. Simply pick a starting color and an ending color and then you can blend straight with a mix of the two colors or around either direction of the color wheel. It gets really fun when you adjust the number of increments and then add noise. No other tool I have found for blends comes even close.

On the Block Blend thread in the showcase forum, the instructions are on about the first page of the discussion. I can help you with specifics if you get stuck on a step. I have it down to a science, can knock one out in 10 min or so.
