Warm, Welcoming Brown

Warm, Welcoming Brown

Not exactly a color that comes to mind first when designing a website, but brown has been a pretty popular color lately.

Three Days of Rain

Three Days of Rain

Happy Sunday, Lovers.

After hearing that a Noreaster was predicted, and watching the locals scramble, as is typical, for food at the last minute, I was almost ready for ten inches of wet, heavy snow again, despite it being mid-April. Where I live, in the sharp-looking part of New York State, it's pretty common for the weather to play games with us. This especially means getting our hopes up for a lush spring.

It's not so much that I mind it. In fact, I find "undesired" weather, like rain, snow, and overcast days, to be the most magical. Today, instead of snow, we are being shown that for the next three days, we will have the precipitation originally predicted, except as rain.

This put me in mind of what rain promises. Between the various flowers my mother kept while growing up, memories of Easter Egg hunts in the mud, and broad leaves to take cover beneath in the hot summer ... I can't help but be just a little happier today.

What does rain make you think about? What's your favourite sort of weather? What are you looking forward to with the change of seasons? What colours come to mind for you?

Light Scattering: Blocking Stars and Light Curtains

Light Scattering: Blocking Stars and Light Curtains

During the day, the sky appears as a deep blue. Arguably, this is because of the scattering of light by air in the same way that a prism separates the spectrum from visible light to a splash of colour on a nearby wall.

This sort of bending might also explain the different colours at sunset and sunrise, rather than just angry, approaching weather. Some argue that the sky is blue because it reflects the ocean, and, in turn, the ocean is blue because it reflects the sky, and I tend to agree with all points based on light scattering.

Light polution from cities scatters its colours into the sky, even for several miles, and tends to appear as a lingering yellow smog. This is powerful enough to taint the black of the night sky enough to blot out the stars.

COLOURlovers is in the running for Best Community Website of 2007 against, Delicious, Flickr, Threadless & Yahoo! Answers.

I can't convince you that COLOURlovers is better than any of those sites (I'm a member at Flickr, Threadless & Delicious). I love those sites and I have a huge amount of respect for all the creators of my fellow nominated sites... BUT, they are all making a huge amount of money doing what they love and we're just doing what we love.

Shifting Gears on Color

Shifting Gears on Color

In world of ads that change colours and shapes as you walk by, it's no surprise that colour changes have started to sneak into the auto-industry. In 2006, a special edition of the Scion xB, for example, was released with a base coating of black paint. Getting a closer look, and when it drives by, a brilliant copper shines back at the eyes.

Using a type of paint that has been specially designed for Mary Kay cars, the classic trademark pink Cadillac gets a sleek new look with a layer of silver paint on top of that base pink, resulting in a car that almost sells the products inside for the driver.

Color Symbolism: Orange

Color Symbolism: Orange

Characterised by joy and creativity, warm like kindness and optimism, orange is a colour that evokes a general sense of wellness. A secondary colour created from red and yellow, it is thought of a colour on the edge and it's no surprised that it shares some of the attributes that red and yellow, its components, carry. It's warmth is stimulating to appetites, and can raise blood pressure if enough red is present.

Always Optimistic
By association, orange is a symbol of wellness and good health because of its correlation to citrus and Vitamin-C rich products. Found in both sunrises and sunsets, it's also a colour associated with autumn, in that it becomes prevalent in leaves as they fall and that Halloween carries orange and black with every decoration.

“Neon” Lights

“Neon” Lights

"Neon" itself has become sort of a misnomer. Neon is a Noble Gas, which means it is very stable in its normal properties. Neon was seen just about everywhere in the 1980s and still lingers today because of its bright red-orange glow.

Because of the popular red-orange signs, "Neon Signs" was generically applied to even blue, green, and white signs despite different noble gasses being involved. In fact, most people I know try to apply "neon" to anything that glows.

To make these different colours, one would need either a single different gas or a combination of neon and another gas.
