3 Design and Space-Planning Resources to Help You Plan Your Next Home Upgrade

Devising a new room layout is one of those strange design activities which manages to be both creatively rewarding and deceptively tedious. There’s no question that it’s exciting to recreate a living space. With just a few tweaks to furniture layout and color, it’s almost as though you’re living in a brand new space!

On the other hand, let’s be honest here. It’s work. Unless you’re astoundingly lucky and get that perfect aesthetic balance on your first try, chances are you’ll be shifting furniture and swatches around a lot.

You know how it is—the couch might protrude too far into a walkthrough area, the TV might not quite work in that corner, that perfect shade of eggshell wall paint may suddenly look bleak and institutional when combined with your glass coffee table.

Getting it “just so” requires a solid dose of trial and error.

This is where design and space-planning resources make a world of difference. Let’s look at three design and space-planning websites and apps which allow you to enjoy all the experimental playfulness you desire with none of the heavy lifting.

Amikasa - 3D Room Design Without The Frustration

A few years ago, using an app to virtually create a three dimensional room or house layout existed purely in the realms of science fiction. These days, 3D room visualizing apps are thick on the ground.

They all operate on similar principles:

  • Draw up your room layout as accurately as possible.
  • Position shapes roughly approximating your furniture where you think they should go.
  • Check it out in a 3D projected view.
  • Rinse and repeat until satisfied.

They’re pretty good. They do give you the ability to bring your idea into virtual reality before you lift a finger. However, they also come with a downside. Most of these apps are incredibly fiddly to use and require quite a bit of practice to master. Put bluntly, you’re trading grunt work for brain work.

But then, along came Amikasa! This app is arguably the best way to visualize a 3D space on the market right now, and for one simple reason. It’s incredibly easy to use.

Instead of relying on smartphone optics to guesstimate the dimensions of a room, or having you generate blueprint like dimensions from scratch, Amikasa starts with a simple question: what’s the rough shape of your room?

From there, it’s a simple matter of tweaking that shape to more closely resemble your room’s specifications. It’s beautifully intuitive and I found I could do in minutes what took me up to an hour in other 3D design apps.

But that isn’t Amikasa’s most significant selling point. What makes this app perfect for me is that you can then use 3D models of actual furniture shapes. You’re not locked into using abstract representations of your stuff. Instead, you’re working with virtual objects which are close enough to reality to make visualization a breeze.

Another big bonus I found is that you can also easily place your surround sound speakers into the equation, finding ways to maximize their utility and aesthetic appeal just as you would with standard furniture.

It’s a thing of beauty and available both for iOS and Android. Give it a try!

PHOTOCOPA - Creative Color Picking

You’d think there’d be a plethora of decent color visualization resources out there for finding that perfect color palette. But it’s actually surprisingly hard to find something genuinely useful, for a few reasons.

A lot of the apps and websites out there focus on (admittedly pretty cool) augmented reality to virtually “paint” your room with your chosen color. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great idea in theory, but I’ve yet to find one which works flawlessly enough to actually help me visualize a room and make sound color decisions.

More critically, screens won’t display color the same way a paint chip does. Your phone or monitor’s luminance, contrast and brightness settings all subtly alter how a color looks. Without an expensive color calibrated monitor, there’s simply no way to get perfectly accurate color matching on an electronic device.

As an aside, if you are contemplating extensive design projects requiring true color and serious graphics-processing grunt, I’d highly recommend investing in a computer system and color smart monitor which is fit for the purpose. If you’re near Sacramento, check out https://callnerds.com/computer-repair-sacramento/. Nerds On Call can provide solid advice on how to upgrade your computer to accommodate heavy design work.

But back to PHOTOCOPA. The reason this app works so well is that it neatly side-steps these design problems by focusing on what really matters—generating a pleasing palette of complementary and contrasting colors you can use as a starting point. Once I have that winning color combination, calibrating my chosen shades against paint swatches is a breeze.

PHOTOCOPA works by keeping it simple.

I start by taking a picture of a color I want to begin with. It may be on an existing piece of furniture, but just as easily it could be a color I stumble across while I’m out and about.

Most recently it was an unusual leaf I found on the sidewalk. But I digress.

You can then have PHOTOCOPA use this shade as a starting point, generating a beautiful assortment of color combinations which all work in different ways for different reasons.

What I love most about this site is that it refuses to be prescriptive. It doesn’t lead you down a false path of choosing one particular color based on a screen’s false rendering. Instead it focuses on what a design app does best: giving you ideas.

Once my creative eye is bumped in a new direction by a surprising color combination, I find it that much easier to see beyond what’s there to the possibilities lying beneath.

This app works by fixing your sights on all the wonderful color possibilities.

Pinterest - For Flashes of Inspiration and Clues You Can Follow

In every design project, whether large or small, there’s a moment where you might find yourself staring into a void. I couldn’t count the number of times I’ve begun a home design upgrade with literally no inkling on the first step I should take.

When these dire, blank moments settle over me, invariably I turn to Pinterest.

Pinterest is to out-of-the-box idea generation as YouTube is to embarrassingly endearing cat videos.

It’s just a vast, eclectic soup of different tastes, styles and disciplines. Every time I delve through its images I find something I hate and something I love—both of which are invaluable in crystallizing where I want to take a design next.

Of course, there are thousands of boards in Pinterest dedicated to interior design, but you’ll be richly rewarded if you gate crash into completely new visual categories you know nothing about.

Try jumping into clothes design boards and look for colors which speak to you. Or if you’re feeling adventurous, try phrases like “scientific art” and “sacred geometry.”

If just one idea in a hundred leaps out of the screen at you, note it down! It’s just one more quirky design possibility. And who knows? It may become the seed of an amazing design path for you to pursue.

The truth is, there’s thousands of tools out there which may bless you with that one golden design idea you’re searching for. Ideas and inspiration come from the oddest of places. However, if you’re going to play it by the numbers, I think these three products represent a fabulous place to begin.

They’re practical without being prescriptive. They’re unusual without being obtuse. Most importantly, they’re great fun to use. Happy designing!

Top colors for your Christmas Tree

They say your whole year is going to be in the spirit of your Christmas Eve. For good omens, everyone in the world is decorating their Christmas tree, their homes, and front yards. To decide what your year is going to be like, it is important to choose what decor your Christmas will be like - which colors and which materials you will use.

If you are looking at a wealthy, elegant 2019, then you should go for gold. Golden decorations, ribbons and twinkle lights will make classy omens for your next year. For purity, beautiful innocence and nostalgia for snow, white snow dust on the branches of your Christmas tree, along with some frosted pine cones will make your evening and the whole year very special.

Christmas tree colors

Frosted branches are well combined with woven brown ribbons, which give your tree a rustic and beautiful look. Perfect if you are looking for a winter idyll for your holidays. Earthy touch to your wraps underneath the tree or a few handmade baskets will make this picture complete and perfect.

Maybe you are looking for a country look, which expresses gratefulness and peace in your family. Great tree to maintain your harmony would be warm red ribbons with berries and traditional decorations, handmade and full of love.

For those of you who are always seeking sensation and glamour, the color of your tree should be driven to purple or royal blue, but either color you prefer, it should glow with a million twinkle lights. This will remind you every day over the cold winter that you are up for a fabulous year full of excitement and style.

For modern couples in 2018, we recommend urban and hype tree, plastic and geometric, to fulfill your artistic and stylish desires, fit in any space you want it, colored in black, with subtle golden shapes over it. It is minimalist, elegant, and very contemporary.

If you are rather traditional and especially a family with children, green tree with a lot of shiny red and pink decorations is what will make the best memories for your children to anticipate Santa Claus for years to come.

Finally, for you who admire the tree's natural beauty and love the wild world, you should keep the tree in the perfect spot where all its green can shine with a very minimalist twinkle, preferably yellow or golden, or light blue, just enough to highlight the tree's arboreal divinity.

Why Cybersecurity Should Affect Your Web Design

Cybersecurity should be at the core of your design before you consider any other elements of your site. Hacking is a serious problem, especially if you collect sensitive data. Your customers need to know they can rely on you to protect their personal information.

About 64 percent of companies have experienced some type of web-based attack. From the smallest business to the largest corporation, all are at the mercy of hackers if they don't put some security measures in place.

A hacker attack occurs every 39 seconds and impacts one in three Americans. With those statistics in mind, put your site users at ease by implementing the following security measures into your website designs:

1. Collect Less Data

One way to protect your customers is to limit the amount of data you collect and store online. Collect only what is an absolute necessity for you to complete an order. If you don't need their birth date, then don't ask for it. Minimize the information so if the worst happens and you do have a security breach, the hackers get less information than they otherwise would.

Some sites collect all types of information in an attempt to market to their users. While there is value in knowing the names of your customers' children and their ages, this also puts them at risk. This type of information is often used to gain access to sensitive accounts with qualifying questions.

2. Secure Your WordPress Site

About 75 million sites use WordPress as their content management system (CMS). Unfortunately, if not appropriately secured, it is vulnerable to hackers. Take the time to secure your WordPress site.

  • Use complicated usernames and passwords that aren't easy to crack.
  • Use a plugin to block anyone trying to log in with the username admin.
  • Change your dashboard location from wp-admin to something with a different name.
  • Utilize SSL.
  • Add a firewall.

Those are some basic things you can do today to protect your WordPress site. You should delve a bit deeper into the topic of securing your WordPress site and close off any backdoors that allow hackers to gain a foothold.

3. Secure Your WordPress Database Prefix

The default database prefix is wp-. Hackers are well aware that most people will stick with the default settings. You can throw them off and hopefully drive them away by changing the prefix you use for your database. Changing your database prefix isn't complicated, but you should always back your site up before making changes.

Changing your prefix protects you from SQL injection attacks. There are plugins you can install that allow you to quickly change your database prefix without a lot of PHP knowledge, such as Brozzme DB Prefix or iThemes Security.

4. Create a Privacy Policy

The European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) now requires website owners to list clear policies on how they protect user data and how they use that data — even if you don't live in the EU. If you have even one customer who falls under GDPR, you must be compliant. You've probably noticed that some sites have privacy policies that are so complex you'd have to be a lawyer to understand them.

Don't do that to your site visitors. Keep your language clear and readable, so site visitors understand what you plan to do with the information you collect and the measures you have in place to protect them. Keep privacy policies simple and to the point. It's probably easier than you think to get GDPR compliant, but it is essential to pay attention to this aspect of your security plan.

5. Secure Your Own Devices

One way hackers gain access to websites is through your devices. No matter where you're working, upload files via virtual private networks (VPN). A VPN lets you remotely upload files without using a public network that might be vulnerable to attack. A VPN works similarly to a firewall to encrypt and protect your data from hackers.

If you are working in a public location and using their guest internet access, secure your device by choosing a public location in your Wi-Fi settings. Limit who can see your device to avoid a situation where another patron gains access to your files and thus to your website.

6. Do Frequent Backups

Let's say the worst has happened and a hacker gained control of your site. They've infiltrated every single file and you have no idea how to fix the problem. If you back up your site frequently, this is less of an Armageddon scenario than if you don't. There are programs you can install that run backups on a regular basis and many website hosting companies do their own nightly backups.

No matter how many safeguards you install, there is a possibility hackers will overtake your site. However, if you have a complete backup, then it isn't as much of a problem. You simply work with your hosting company to find the way they entered your site, secure it and wipe out the old data, uploading your backup in its place. Your site is only down a fraction of the time it would otherwise be.

One of the biggest challenges as a designer is getting into the habit of backing up your work every time you make the slightest change. It's easy to forget this step and lose hours of work because a hacker takes over your site. Either set up automated backups or get into the habit of doing one each time you finish changes.

Cybersecurity Matters

The most beautifully designed site in the world isn't useful if it gets hacked. Consider the backend of your website's design to prevent hackers from getting in. Make your site user-friendly, but also consider the type of information you collect and how you can keep it safe for those who entrust you with it. Cybersecurity is just another element of web design that makes your work better than your competitors'.

Art Plagiarism

This is the topic we are all interested in, but somehow can't know enough about it. What awoke our curiosity is how pop artists used Mona Lisa to create all these series of colorful pieces, yet that is not considered plagiarism. Up to which point can we use someone else's work as a reference for our own art piece and not be plagiators?

Appropriation means borrowing, recycling, copying a piece of work to use it for a new creation. Appropriation as such has been a part of the tradition in visual art, although it is now considered a post-modern movement, in which artists used historically known artworks to create their own image. Appropriation artists are different from plagiators, meaning that their original intention is for the viewers to recognize the original image (such as Mona Lisa or WWII poster), and the work is centered on this clash of pop and history.

mona lisa

One of the most eccentric artists of appropriation is certainly Marcel Duchamp. His Mona Lisa with mustache left a curious audience, as well as the variety of Mona Lisa's known in the work of Paul Giovanopoulos. Although, Marcel is more known for his scandalous "Fountain" - an art piece - a urinal which made it to the list of significant landmarks in 20th-century conceptual art.

Pablo Picasso is also an artist of appropriation, but just as he borrowed and changed other artists work ("Las Meninas" by Diego Velazquez), he had his own artwork appropriated ("Lady Alabama" by Robert Colescott is originally Picasso's "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon"). Thus, Picasso's famous quote appeared "Good artists borrow, great artists steal".

Unlike the above-mentioned artists, the icon of pop art, Andy Warhol, faced a series of lawsuits for his work. He is famous for silk-screening technique, using photographs made by some famous photographers. The reason he was confronting these accusations was that his paintings and the original photographs were competing for products on the market of art buyers.

How to avoid plagiarism?

When letting someone's work strongly influence your own, it is recommended that you seek permission from the artist whose work you want to change. If your artwork is inspired by another, it is a good practice to give references and show gratefulness and respect to the artist. Although, the 20th century started a question which is still alive and makes us wonder - what is and what isn't art.

Some might say that taking two images and stitching them together or adding text into an existing image is not original artwork. One thing we know for sure is that using objects that are common (urinals, food cans) and misplacing them to create a new context is challenging the question of whether it is art, but so far it hasn't been called theft.

Winter Wedding Colors We’re Looking For

Trends in the wedding industry tend to change often and when you’re getting married, the time of year will most likely reflect the season and the color of that season. It’s very important to create an atmosphere that adds personality and style to your winter wedding and using color is the perfect way to do this. It’s not always just as simple as saying you’ll use one of two colors you like, there are hundreds out there that may look better than others, especially when the snow is falling and your cold outside. Darker colors are what we would recommend in general if you’re having a winter wedding, this goes for bridesmaid dresses and everything else. You’ll find that people tend to wear darker colors as it’s colder and duller in the winter season, this doesn’t mean to say your day is dark and gloomy though, the colors simply add to the beauty of the day.

Rich Purple

Coat your wedding day in the majestic color of rich purple, it’s so complimentary for different figures, but it also makes a beautiful tie and groomsman color too. You can decorate your tables and ceremony in this purple color too add a little royalty to the day. The richness of the dark purple color is sure to add some mystery to your day, but it works well even if the weather outside is frightful. It’s the perfect complimentary base color to accent colors like grey and white and will be a perfect match with wedding dresses. Perhaps also add pale lilac for a softer scheme for your wedding day.

Muted Berry

Contrast a dark ivy with the winterberry colors, and you could have yourself the best and most beautiful winter wedding there is. Berry colors are ideal in the fall months, but when it comes to winter, people forget they even exist. Yet, if you’re willing to put them with some metallic colors such as champagne or ivy, you could have yourself a wedding you’ll never forget. This is even better for winter weddings taking place near Christmas as berry colors are all the trend around this time. The muted berry scheme contrasts well with the accent metallic colors to create a playful delicacy many brides only ever dream of.
