Community Day! COLOURlovers Member Mini-Highlight, CreateMixedMedia Challenge News and Survey Talk

Spring is hitting some of us big time! Are you feeling the soft pastels or bursting-budding colors? Have you gotten the bug to create even more flowery floral patterns and shapes?

This week I'd like to highlight an amazing piece of artwork in the shapes division...

HeringDevotee created this beautiful lotus flower using Seamless Lite - a true piece of art and must have taken some amount of dedication. Her commentary about creating this in Seamless Lite:

I just kinda "sculpted" this using circles, triangles and lines in Seamless Lite.

Although she doesn't necessarily recommend this method, because it creates such a large "file" type to do a repeat load from your saved shapes, it's still amazing! I think it's a great example of not limiting yourself with the tools you have at hand. By squishing, bending, mashing, rotating and a good eye, HeringDevotee was able challenge what she had to work with to create a work of sketch-like art. Quite impressive!

Speaking of challenges, the CreateMixedMedia Template Challenge came to a close last week with some great submissions. I will Love Note all winners, participants and commenters on April 1st announcing live showcase. Winning templates will be showcased on the homepage during the first week of April (days 1 through 7) over at CreateMixedMedia.com.

Suggestions for the next survey: Contests & Voting

Another big, congratulations to COLOURlovers OrigamiMei and Pennington for winning the FLOR contest! I am interested in ideas from you guys on how we can run contests where it doesn't feel that the most popular COLOURlover(s) seem to win.

I honestly don't feel that either winner won because they might be popular (as they both have attested), but we do see that you may want more attention to how the voting is filtered and submissions displayed on such large-scale contests. You recall a previous contest with Betabrand (lisadale69 and her plaid shirt palette) where a new COLOURlover won (new in that she registered in order to play in the contest), so such is the balance of the matter.

I have to admit, both winners are fantastic, active members of our community and are very talented and well deserving - Maybe next weeks survey?! Give me some ideas on how to make voting more fair and/or easier. I see some great suggestions in the FLOR winners post.

Lastly, our community surveys are getting some nice feedback showing us what you guys feel and think as a majority. The last survey really showed the need for some Seamless Studio (and Seamless Lite) tutorials and a huge interest in those tools. So thank you for the feedback and the extra little comments have also been helpful, I read each and every one.

This week I decided to keep it simple and find out how mobile some of you are as I've suddenly received an amount of questions about the COLOURlovers site and using it mobile, both for contests like we recently ran with FLOR and with creating pattern templates using Seamless Lite. Interesting feedback so let's find out how everyone else uses COLOURlovers, I am curious how many of you are trying it out on the iPad, iPhone, Android devices and such.

Last weeks T-Shirt winner is NorthShoreShells, COLOURlovin since December 2011. Congratulations and thanks for the survey entry and extra input!

Thank you for address the contest issue, Molly. It has been bothering me quite a bit.
Love the surveys! Thank you
Team
Thanks everyone! I am trying to get a good handle on what is most important so that we can tackle the most important issues first the best we can. :)

Thanks for everyone's feedback!

Inspired me to do this!

NICE! I still say we need to have a COLOURlover of the week. Put someone in the spotlight and do a little interview on him or her. Maybe COLOURlovers of the month if week is too much work for you.I sure am glad you finally changed the featured lover here but we don't know WHY she's the featured lover and her picture is screwed up and streched out. Awww! Poor Magg. We should write a little something about Magg and why she's the featured lover. Interview her and stuff and put it in the blog. :-)
Agreed kinda like what the CLAD group was

Ycc2106 should be featured!!!!!

We all miss her she deserves a tribute blog for all her contributions
to the community!

I'm sure we can lure her back that way!

:)

COLOURlover is our CL artist of the day!
If any of them inspires you to make a pattern, or the colours to make a palette: tag it CLAD and post your creations here

Everyone who was ever a CLAD artist knows how good it felt to wake up to over 100+ love notes and feel the love of the community! It brought us together and made us happy and inspired!!!!!

I can't do it without her! If CL made official I think it would raise all of our spirits! Not to mention it is sooooo much fun!

100 % agree. I really enjoyed discovering other wonderful profiles that I didn't know about. All thanks to CLAD and my day was fantastic, one of my favorite on CL. I'm quite surprised that it isn't an official part of the community.

The featured artist is nice, but it doesn't seem much like CLAD. What I loved about CLAD the interactive part of it, using the artist's palettes or templates or colors to create something new. I found it stretched me as an artist and helped me get to know and appreciate the work of others. I looked at their work a lot more closely than reading an article would have made me. Does this make sense?

Anna is a superwoman. I never could understand how she did all that she did and I know that no one could replace her but I really do miss CLAD. Thanks for all you do too, Dawn. Henriette (Bluesinger)

This is a fabulous idea but sounds like a lot of work. Of course I would love it but I'm not able to help with any of the technical stuff. If I can do anything else I'm willing! Here's my BIG VOTE: YES!

Carol
During CLAD day we also encouraged artists to name a colour after the CLAD artist of the day!

I'm confused...what are we voting for? Making CLAD official or having featured COLOURlovers?
Thanks for posting my thoughts, Dawn. In case I wasn't clear enough: CLAD: I vote YES!
I was a little confused also, but I would definitely vote for ycc as CLAD, and/or making CLAD official!
I think they would be one in the same! When the CL artist is featured it would be the day or week of discovery for that person. So in the thread we would post the creations we made from their colours, palettes and templates and then we would name a colour after them!

The feature would be their story behind their art and also a tribute to the creativity they have so generously given to us!

my VOTE
Please, please can CLAD become official? I just want someone else also to exprience the same joy I had when I was the CL of the day. Plus it was so much fun to do patterns for the CL of the day and at the same time got to see some other palettes that have been done but been forgotten or missed. Because everyone (or just me :)) loves when someone uses his/hers palette to do a pattern or his/hers colors to make a new one lover palette. I really miss those days..
I'm all for anything positive that will boost community morale. <3
What is 'official' as opposed to 'un-official'?
Does 'official' simply mean that it'll be revived with someone other than YCC hosting it? Or does the term 'official' also involve a newly added aspect to it?

Is it safe to assume that American Women will host it? ;)

I don't really think that it needs voting at all. Just do it.
You'll soon see how people react to it. It´ll be positive I´m sure.
The problem is it is a lot of work and I can't do it without YCC! If it became "official" Colour Lovers would host it as part of their community day! Whoever is the CL/Community Liaison would be in charge! :)

They could weave the challenge aspects into it as well. The CLAD could create the challenge for the week. For example, they could say ok create a musical template with numbers, 1-30 for the month of etc...... , just like they did with the mixed media challenge. Only The winners will be part of next years CL Calendar, maybe sponsored by...............

It would be nice to let them all know how much their work is appreciated and loved, with a little tribute to their creations ...this is just a humble opinion, i do miss Artist of the day!! though and ycc activities... Many thanks to Mousey dear that has continued with some of them, although there are so many more that are missed i wish they do come back some day :)
YES I AGREE, with Freak4color as well ... it suddenly all stopped when ycc left so all the colourlovers whom signed afterwards never got their chance to become Artist of the Day, i think that is quite unfair for them, anyways Oragami has a great point whatever needs to be done for a positive boost im in :D Freak4Color wrote:

Yes for Clad!
Aw snap! I was just thinking about how much I miss clad...
I keep checking back to see if its up and running again. I agree that clad is toomuch for one person to run - I don't know how ycc managed- and still had time to play here.
I VOTE YES for an officially curated clad group linked to a featured artist!!!
Ditto re: CLAD stuff above. I've been inactive on CL for a few months now due to Real Life issues but I'm looking forward to becoming active again next month! In the meantime, I've been watching for CLAD notices, and have missed participating in that maybe more than indulging in my own doodling/coloring! Besides, my CLAD day is one that I'll never forget - seriously. It was such a shock to see my inbox flooded with love from some amazing creative people...I'm tearing up as I write this...and I love that CLAD exposed me to some ColourLovers that I might not have otherwise run across in this fantastic community. Given the infrequency of the "featured artist" updates, instituting a CLAW (week?) or CLAM (month?) or CLAEOD (every other day?) -- we'd take anything! I agree that the opportunity to generate gifts is an important part of the magic of CLAD, so in whatever form it could be made "official", it would be important to retain that.

the future is always uncertain. i hope that we can register multiple administrators of the community.
i think that multi-admin feature can really increase the effectiveness and efficient management of community pages.
3:
if you are not sure about the border of the "un-official" / "official" of the community, i think there are unfair.
vote, recommendation, the number of members ...... . What is the standard for official community?
thanks.
