Garnering a Garter

Are you due for some eye-candy? Weather you want to make your own garter or buy one, this is a fun topic! Maybe you're wanting to find something more unique than that white lacy thing they carry almost everywhere (wedding or craft stores). I have concluded that any big company cannot possibly create something as cool as a hand made garter.

When I got married, I just figured what you see on the shelf is what you get. I'm not saying something white and lacy is bad, actually, you can find a number of white and lacy picks that have a lot of uniqueness about them still - simply in the quality or type of lace and/or ribbon used and don't get me started on embellishments! Peacock feathers, antique broaches and little charms are just a few used in these designs.

If you're looking for something wild or super sexy or absolutely adorable - I found that Etsy.com has the biggest and coolest, non-standard variety of wedding day garters than any average offline or online store could ever carry. You can also order a custom garter from places like mom and daughter team, Sew Unique Wedding Garters or ask an Etsy.com crafter to custom-design one especially for you. Ready for some beauties? MAKE YOUR OWN.

If you're crafty and comfortable with a sewing machine or even hand sewing, you're probably quick to realize how easy it really is to make your own wedding day garter. Very little time and expense can be put into making your own garter. You could even pick out the material, lace and accessories and ask a local seamstress what they'd charge.

Here are a couple of resources for good instructions on making your own garter. I tend to be leery of following someones written instructions without any photo how-to's, believe me, you'll get lost...here were the best on a Google search...

If you're not savvy with sewing, you could also use a hot glue gun, super glue and possibly stapling. LOL use whatever floats your boat. :)

i married at the beginning of the month, and while i didn't want the standard "something blue" garter, i wanted to keep the tradition alive. i wanted something homespun and unique -- etsy is definitely the place to go! i bought a black and ivory garter set (one to toss and one to keep) with a sweet black gemstone charm.

VERY NICE! thanks for sharing! :) Yes, I was trying to say that you actually can go pretty traditional but still have something nicer than the cheap stuff you find off the shelf. I like the uniqueness in that you may have the only one exactly like that one, when buying from an Etsy crafter. :)
