Decadent Desserts: Sweet Treats from Around the World

Decadent Desserts: Sweet Treats from Around the World

A bright bowl of fresh-picked summer berries. The rich, dark stream of molten chocolate from a lava cake. The delicate colors from the creamy base to the caramelized top of a Crème brûlée. Desserts around the world never cease to amaze us here at Forkly--the detail, the depth in colors, the genius and creativity that come to life. When dessert arrives, the table falls silent, guests gasp at the beauty in unison, and with mouths watering, they prepare for that first bite of sweetness to balance out the savory feast before it.

Exquisite Entrees: Colors from the Earth to the Sea

Exquisite Entrees: Colors from the Earth to the Sea

Incredible how creatures of the sea can camouflage themselves in the depths but captivate us with their vibrant colors when paired with earthy vegetables, legumes, and grains. For your second course (here's the first, if you missed it!), we've decided to highlight this lovely balance of earth and sea.

We’ve included two dishes from avid Forkly-ers, Chef Rodrigo De La Calle of Aranjuez, Spain and Chef Alessandro Ricciardi of Florence, Italy. Chef De La Calle’s creations focus on “Gastrobotánica,” a new wave of cooking that emphasizes the use of uncommon plant species for delicate, artistic dishes. Chef Ricciardi works with flour and natural yeast concentrating on impastazione, or, “making the dough” into beautifully textured dishes with contrasting reds, purples, greens, and such, depending on the ingredients of the season.

As is our reaction to many of the chefs and food enthusiasts on Forkly, we wish we could hop on a plane just to try a bite!

Amazing Fractal Patterns Found in Nature

Amazing Fractal Patterns Found in Nature

Put simply, a fractal is a never-ending pattern. Put not-so-simply, a fractal pattern is a "geometric pattern that is repeated at ever smaller scales to produce irregular shapes and surfaces that cannot be represented by classical geometry." From rivers to trees to mountains, nature is full of fractals, making these amazing patterns both complex and familiar at the same time.

With tools like Google Earth at our fingertips, people like Paul Bourke, a Research Associate Professor at the University of Western Australia, have put cool websites together like this one, featuring some of the most stunning aerial shots of Earth's landscapes that you'll find on the internet. With the help of other geographical enthusiasts, Bourke has a pretty extensive collection of fractals from all over the world. We selected some of our colorful favorites to share with you guys.

The Effect of Color | PBS Off Book

The Effect of Color | PBS Off Book

Off Book is a bi-weekly web series from PBS that explores cutting edge art, the artists that make it, and the people that share it online. Episodes have ranged from web design to viral video to steampunk culture, and their latest entry into the series is all about color.

In The Effect of Color, we hear from a handful of color experts about the powerful impact that color has in our everyday lives.

Color is one of the fundamental elements of our existence, and defines our world in such deep ways that its effects are nearly imperceptible. It intersects the worlds of art, psychology, culture, and more, creating meaning and influencing behavior every step of the way. Most fascinating are the choices we make, both subconsciously and consciously, to use color to impact each other and reflect our internal states. Whether in the micro-sense with the choice of an article of clothing, or the macro-sense where cultures on the whole embrace color trends at the scale of decades, color is a signifier of our motives and deepest feelings.

You can find more fascinating Off Book episodes on their YouTube channel.

Labor of Love - Creative Market Now Open!

Labor of Love - Creative Market Now Open!

It's been a long time coming, and after many months of hard work we're super excited and proud to announce that Creative Market has opened its doors!

In a heartfelt welcome message, our fearless leader Bubs explains some of the thought behind Creative Market:

Your local farmer's market is more than a transactional experience, it's an opportunity to meet the producers and learn the story behind their goods, and to interact with a community of like-minded people who all appreciate artisan creators. Creative Market is built with a similar ethos to make beautiful design simple and accessible to everybody, by building a platform that lets designers around the world connect with consumers of design assets like fonts, templates, illustrations, and more. And to facilitate those connections in a marketplace that celebrates, supports and pushes the design world forward.

You can read more about our goals and our future in the full blog post.

Without further adieu, we present to you Creative Market! Feel free to poke around, click all the things, and if you have any feedback for us, boy would we love to hear from you. :)
