Color Inspiration: Nail Art in a Kaleidoscope of Happy Hues

Color Inspiration: Nail Art in a Kaleidoscope of Happy Hues

Nail Art. It's a modern trend that's surprisingly not so modern, with historical roots dating as far back as ancient times, surprisingly. In fact, artifacts have actually been found that reveal that manicures (albeit rudimentary ones) were taking place 4,000 plus years ago, in southern Babylonia, with Egypt's royal tombs riddled with tools pointing toward being used in the beautification ritual. And in Rome? The people were known to adorn their nails with a colorful crimson concoction of sheep fat and blood! And those are just a few examples. Things have definitely come a long way since those times, but one main denominator has stayed the same: the affinity for beauty expressing itself in color. Gathered here are some of our favorite and all-over-the-place wondrous manicure and nail art creations, along with the pretty palettes they inspired. Feel free to add your own awe-worthy examples below in the comments, Colourlovers!

OOH LA LAVENDER

It's common knowledge that the color purple is noted worldwide as signifying royalty and nobility, but did you also know that the shade first originated from a dye created from the actual mucus glands of a tropical sea snail called the murex? Ewww! And no, that's snot a lie! We for one are glad that other forms of creating our favorite hues of this grape-inspired shade are available today, including myriad rainbows of nail polishes ranging from lavender blues, like below, to electric violets.

  1. 1-ooh la lavender

Ooh_La_Lavender

KITTY MATTE

By definition, matte signifies something that has a "dull or lusterless surface," such as matte paint, or a photograph with a matte finish. And although these nail polishes are not "shiny" per se, they--with their kitty cat faces front and center--are anything bit dull or boring!

2-kittymatte

CHERRY BOMB

Titled in honor of one of our favorite (and taboo!) childhood prank props--those round firecrackers that made such a loud kaboom at explosion they could make one's heart stop--these vibrant, oh-so-red nails stand out even more for the "explosion" of green, purple and pink that shows up on just one of the showcased digits.

3-cherry bomb

RHINESTONE POWGIRL

Our cheeky title for this manicure is inspired by the classic 1977 TV movie Rhinestone Cowgirl, which features a dazzling Ann-Margret singing and dancing at the Grand Ole Opry House. Like the feature, this nail art is so bling-worthy and sparkle-yay that it also has us wanting to get up and dance and shout. Honestly, it's so hypnotic and mesmerizing, we can barely look away!

4-Rhinestone Powgirl

PRETTY IN PINK

Another cult classic movie, Pretty in Pink, which stars Molly Ringwald, had the1980's babies falling head over heels with it from hello. And another thing we're falling for? This nail art creation showcasing wildflowers in pastel shades of blue, green, pale, romantic pink, and more.

SHADES OF SHERBET

When we first saw this nail art creation, those childhood summer afternoons spent with a fast-melting cone of pastel sherbet instantly came to mind. Our favorite flavor was lime, what about you?

RAINBOW GLOW

According to scientists (who are pretty darn smart), the most bright rainbows apparently happen during thunderstorms or other heavy rainfall, because when the sun's light passes through raindrops, it shines brighter and gives off more color. Makes sense to us. And if this nail art below is any indicator, there's been a storm a-brewin' about this gal's salon.

PUZZLING

Most people attribute puzzles to things which are problems, or something that is difficult or confusing that one must figure out. All of the above are indeed true, but when it comes to this nail art creation, we don't even feel the need to figure it out, as just gazing at the happy, bright colors configured in its jigsaw-shaped patterns presents near limitless joy bubbles in our hearts. That's about all the explanation we need, to know that they're awesome, and pretty perfect.

SNEAK(ER)Y FEELING

Who could forget the beloved and iconic Chuck Taylor All-Stars (or "Chucks" for short) that pretty much the entire population once sported while growing up? We're definite fans, which is why we of course adore this unique and bright nail art creation!

9-Sneak(er)y Feeling

BLING QUEEN

Merriam Webster defines this nail art creation to near perfection via its description of the word "bling": flashy jewelry worn. Yep, this manicure may be near blinding on regards to its bling factor, but it is also undeniably oh-so-fun!

Color Inspiration in Art: Famous Paintings Provide Perfect Palette Ideas

From Monet to Van Gogh, brilliant artists throughout history have delighted and inspired us with their paintings filled with emotion-evoking beauty and near endless strokes and swirls of vibrant, life-giving color. Here are just a few of our favorite paintings by famed artists across the world and throughout history, as well as the colourlover palettes "birthed" by each.

WEAR YOUR SUNSCREAM

Ascribed by most with the name, "The Scream," this aptly-titled painting by Expressionist artist Edvard Munch originally was given the moniker "The Scream of Nature." Featuring a figure in apparent agony, against a passionately (some could even say violently) colored sky of bold oranges, golds and the like, critic Arthur Ludlow took so much stock in the striking and timely importance of this piece that he even went so far as to describe it as "an icon of modern art, a Mona Lisa of our time."

STARRY NIGHTLIGHT

Who isn't familiar with this whimsical rendition of a dreamy, star-filled sky at night? One of our absolute favorites, "The Starry Night" was painted by Dutch post-impressionist Vincent van Gogh in June 1889. Surprisingly, few realize where this beautiful and lovely painting was actually created: it depicts the view from the east-facing window of Van Gogh's asylum room at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, just before sunrise--the idyllic village, however, was an addition from the edges of the inpatient's own imagination.

IRIS(K) IT

Also created in 1989--during Van Gogh's time within an asylum in Saint-Rémy, France (due to several episodes of self-mutilation and hospitalization)--is "Irises," a painting which the artist began the very first week of his arrival, and toiled tirelessly over from within the outdoor confines of the asylum's garden.

MAD HATTER

Created by renowned painter Lichtenstein, "Woman with Flowered Hat" was made during a time when the artist was on a personal attack of sorts regarding the mentality of "High Art." Lichtenstein chose to combat such snobbery with subject matter of "low art" via comic strip imagery, and specifically, copycatting masterworks of some of the most famed artists, including Cezanne, Picasso, and more. This particular piece is based on Picasso's own works with the muse of Dora Maar, Picasso's once lover. Like Picasso's original work, so too is Lichtenstein's rendition famed for its wild colors and grotesque distortion of features.

KISS THIS!

Golden is the first thing that comes to mind when receiving one's first glimpse of Gustav Klimt's iconic painting "The Kiss." Such a sentiment makes perfect natural sense when  faced with the fact that the Austrian artist created this visionary piece at the height of what was literally described as his "Golden Period." A mixture of oil paint, layers of deftly applied gold leaf layers, and the emotion infused with the subject matter of two lovers in a passionate embrace serves to send all viewers into their own world of idyllic contemplation, including us. We will be the first to admit, this masterpiece is nothing short of golden.

PERSISTENT MEMORIES

Artist Salvador Dali is perhaps our very favorite artist, ever. This particular piece, "The Persistence of Memory" --or in Catalan: La persistència de la memòria--was created in 1931 and remains as one of Dali's most famous masterpieces.

6-Salvadore Dali, The Persistence of Memory

PONDERING

Considered to be the founder of French Impressionist painting, Oscar-Claude Monet's desire to capture the beauty of the French countryside--specifically the shifting light within the days and nights, as well as the passing of seasons--led the artist to begin practicing this methodology of painting the exact same scene numerous times. A resident on Giverny, Monet invested much time in landscaping his property to include his famed lily ponds and gardens, of which are featured below amid swirls of crimson, muted mint and nearly chartreuse sunlight shades.

CHAIRY SITUATION

Known for becoming infatuated with many women, who then became muses for his works, Pablo Picasso created "The Red Armchair" surrounding his smitten subject of Marie-Therese Walter. Nearly 30 years younger than the famed painter, Walter's blonde hair, broad features, and curvy figure entranced Picasso, who was quite vocal about her charms. According to the opinions of many, the motif featured within this painting--showcasing a distorted visage featuring both frontal and profile views--is believed to be symbolic of (or at least acknowledging) the double life the two were carrying at the time. Whatever the reason for way he went about displaying the beauty, we are fascinated, and big fans, especially of that bold, bright color kaleidoscope!

REAR WINDOW

It is often said that the utilization and variations of color was how Henri Matisse conceived and structured his art. Perhaps giving us his own explanation of his approach, the painter penned this description of his masterpiece, "The Window," in a letter: "Through the window of the drawing room one sees the green of the garden and a black tree trunk, a basket of forget-me-nots on the table, a garden chair and a rug."

MERRY POPPIES

Artist Childe Hassam painted "Poppies, Isles of Shoals" based on the beautiful (and largest) island in the Atlantic archipelago four just off New Hampshire and Maine (also known as Appledore). Perhaps the most noteworthy American Impressionist of his time, Appledore would become Hassam's haven, where the artist would often go for retreat and creative inspiration.

Color Inspiration: Mesmerizing Shades of Mosaic Tiles

Merriam Webster's defines a mosaic as: a surface decoration made by inlaying small pieces of variously colored material to form pictures or patterns. And whether they be created with stunning slivers of stained glass, starkly contrasting shards of ceramic, or gorgeously stained tile, we here at Colourlovers have always been big fans of all things mosaic. Gathered here below are just a few of our favorite colorful conglomerations, along with the yay-worthy palettes they inspired. WHAT A WONDERFUL WHIRLED

This whimsical mosaic wonderland was created to infuse beauty into Glendene School, an institution in Easington Colliery Co., Durham that works with young people with learning disabilities. The best part? The talented artists happen to be 11 of Glendene's very own star pupils, who whipped together this remarkable, joy-inspiring juxtaposition of seasons over a surprisingly brief period of just four days. An impressive accomplishment to say the least, here's celebrating this beautiful whirled piece!

DIAL-A-RAINBOW

Having received a local grant for $5,000--allocated in order to help local San Francisco community organizations beautify their small corners of the city--Hillcrest Elementary School hired an art consultant and purchased supplies that students then used to better (and beautify!) their campus. Among one of their additions was this gorgeous telework mosaic. The final verdict for their rainbow-riddled result? A++ and solid gold star sticker!

TREE STORY

A tree grows in....Manchester? Well, technically, it was handcrafted in Manchester, and now towers tall over the parishioners at the town's St. Chrysostom's Church in the UK. Commissioned by the congregation, local artist and insanely talented sculptor, Angie Sidwell, created the stunning piecemeal arbor with a little help from the church's children, as well as kiddos from the church's two primary schools. Way to go team!

BIRDS OF A FEATHER

This bubble-gum hued mosaic's vibrant colors pops with personality, enough to smack a smile straight on our lips, and leave a delicious, almost edible vision in our brains of coral, pink, and--dare we say, salmon? Created by artist Beverly Herman, this flamingo-themed piece is personally one of our top picks. And did you know that the word "flamingo" actually comes from the Spanish and Latin word "flamenco," which means fire, and refers to the bright color of the birds' feathers? And even more fascinating: the brightness and intensity of each flamingo's personal feather palette is determined directly by its diet. Who knew?!

STEP IT UP

When it comes to liveliness and vitality, Brazilians are known the world over to be full of both! The culture of this vibrant country practically pulses with every heartbeat of each citizen, and even the government takes great strides (or steps?) in order to ensure that their capital city is dressed to impress (and inspire) the hearts of locals and tourists alike. Pictured here is an iconic and extremely colorful mosaic tile stairway in Lapa, Rio de Janeiro. Looks like the rest of the world better step up its color game!

GUELL-O RAINBOW

Located in Barcelona, Spain, Park Guell was first commissioned by Eusebi Guell, an aristocrat who desired to have the park be a stylish haven for those of her shared aristocratic class. Commissioned to undertake its creation and design, Antonio Gaudi made what can only be described as a real, life Wonderland. Pictured here is the park's entrance, a terraced area offering an amazing view of both the grounds itself and Barcelona in its entirety, and marked by our favorites, a colorful kaleidoscope of tiled mosaic seats.

DOWNTOWN BLUES

One of the many charms of New York City, this beautiful mosaic below is one among a collection of many that were created from the turn of the 20th century and continue into the present. Found spanning the entire five Burroughs of the Big Apple, these cheery and colorful creations harken back to a feeling of yesteryear, which is always somehow comforting and just, YAY.

HAPPY HALE

Leave it to a Frenchman--known for their impeccable taste in fashion and style--to come up with one of the world's most whimsical and wonderful abodes. La Maison Picassiette- a beautiful, complicated, inspirational, and mystifying home that Raymonde Isidore, a middle-aged manual worker, built by himself for his family between the years 1938 and 1964. Pictured below is the wonder-filled house and idyllic garden, each covered with intricate mosaics of broken crockery, paintings, and sculptures.

IGUANA MORE COLORS

Although we swear it looks much more like an iguana to us, the powers that be and are "in the know," explain that this stunning "dragon" fountain, located at the entrance of Antonio Gaudi's architectural outdoor masterpiece, Parc Guell, is indeed that of the fire-breathing kind. Regardless, the reptilian creation, with all its mosaic mishmash of whimsy, wonder, and COLOR, serves as an enchanting invitation and greeting to all visitors of this artistic Barcelona garden, as if saying, "Come in, Come in! and Enjoy Our Beautiful, Color-full World!"

SHADY STEPS

San Francisco is a city long synonymous with rainbows, and we love it all the more for it! These "shady steps"--a colorful mosaic-made stairway located on 16th Avenue--have become an iconic locale for residents and locals alike to visit and snap copious amounts of color-filled photographs. And can you blame them? Its rainbow rungs going up, up, up have wooed us too.

Tie-Dye Another Day

Psychedelic colors swirl throughout this oh-so-sweet and vibrant slice of birthday cake! While gazing at this over-the-top, rainbow-riddled pastry, we are not only  inspired to create one aww-mazing color palette to match, but we also have to admit that we started to get a bit of a hypnotic headache feel, mesmerized by that seemingly spinning spectrum of colors!

MACAROON MANIA

Italy and France are the two European countries that first popularized this pretty and petit sweet treat. However, the delicious faux cookies have actually been around since ancient times, their original recipe being simpler: Almonds ground into a paste, mixed with honey and baked. The main difference between early, traditional macaroons and cookies is that real macaroons don't contain flour, while cookies do. In fact, the word itself--macaroon--is rooted in the Italian word "macaroni," which literally translates to ground almond paste. Traced back even more in history, the Greek root word for macaroon is "makakis," which translates as "blessed food". And we like the sound of that! Add some sweet pastel and other pretty, eye-pleasing colors, and it's a win for everybody!

I SCREAM FOR COLOR

Did you know that it's been estimated to take about 50 licks to put away one entire scoop of ice cream?! And speaking of licking, that more men (13% in fact!) admit to licking their ice cream bowls clean of every last bit, versus the mere 8% of women who admitted to their affinity for making sure not to miss a drop! And what are America's favorite flavors, according to recent surveys? Vanilla, chocolate, butter pecan, strawberry, and mint chocolate chip, which definitely seem to be represented in this image and accompanying palette--each offering their own unique taste, and hue.

3-SW TRI_Scream_For_Color

BERRIED TREASURE

You don't have to be a tough-as-nails, swash-buckling pirate to enjoy this colorful bounty of berried treasure. Filled with yummy strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries, this mini-dessert makes for a lovely palette of varying shades. And because here at Colourlovers, we adore all fun facts, here's a few to enlighten and amuse you: Did you know strawberries were used as a medicinal herb in Rome in the 13th Century? Or that an entire Belgian museum is dedicated just to strawberries!? And perhaps our personal favorite berry "bit," for those who have ever eaten a rarely found double strawberry, there's an old wive's tale that if you break one of these crimson gems in half and share it with a member of the opposite attraction, you will have them literally eating out of your hand--led by the magical split strawberry to fall head over heels in love with you, that is!

4-SW TR

MAGIC TRIX

Although that silly rabbit may like to spread his stories about how Trix are just for kids, this technicolor sweet treat seen below, joyfully sprinkled with our favorite "kids'" cereal to boot, begs to differ! Because let's face it, only a real man or woman could handle this two-fisted ice cream style sammich'!

5-SW TRMagic_Trix

SMOOTH(IE) OPERATOR

Remember those hot summer days of childhood, when your mom would let you help her make your favorite homemade popsicles?! We sure do! So when we spotted these smoothie-inspired fruity and fun versions below, we had to shake our creative cobwebs loose from our brains and immediately bust out a brilliant color palette to match! It sure helps that they used "delicious" colors to concoct their icy treats!

6-SW TRSmooth(ie)_Operator

FRUITOPIA

Far from forgetting (or loving any less!) all of those health nuts out there in our Colourlovers community, we made sure to include in our list of faves a fruit-inspired sweet treat. From its buttery yellow juicy chunks of tropical pineapple to its vibrant crimson slices of strawberry, mellow hued honeydew melon, and  blueberries bursting with color that is anything but sad, this aptly named dessert "fruitopia" does seem pretty near perfect. And even though the white, billowy whipped cream doesn't boast a bold or crazy pigment, we're pretty sure our palettes (both taste and color!) are sure glad to have it represent!

7-SW TRFruitopia

BLAST FROM THE PASTEL

When one thinks of pastel colors, the adjectives that instantly come to mind are most often words like "soothing", "soft", "milky", or "muted." Well, we got to thinking on this, and we don't know about you, but we can't help but wonder if sometimes, pastels find our descriptions just a wee bit patronizing! Far from being the weakest links of the color wheel, we personally find that--at least in our hearts--these chilled out shades of pink, purple, blue, green, and yellow pack a powerful punch, precisely for their mellow vibes, mon!

8-SW TR

YOU SAY GOODBYE, I SAY JELLO!

Jello. No one is quite sure WHAT it IS, but we all sure seem to each have some fond or silly memory from childhood involving the colorful, quivering, gelatinous sweet treat. Our favorite reminiscent blast from the past involving this strange concoction are whipping up a batch of our favorite flavor and breaking out the animal cookie cutters, instantly transforming a boring square pan of goo into a proverbial zoo of giraffes, lions, and bears (oh my!)  And although we didn't have our animal shapes handy, we did create a color palette paying homage to this, one of our most cherished childhood desserts!

I DONUT UNDERSTAND

Although, officially, the Dutch are credited with first bringing donuts to the U.S. in the 1800s--calling them “olykoeks”, or oily cakes, nonetheless!--America definitely doesn't slouch when it comes to keeping up the tradition of ensuring that these gooey gooey fried sweet treat stick around, as the majority of Americans (despite the original nickname) are known to practically inhale them on a daily basis! And if you think the Dutch moniker is less than stellar, wait till you hear what the French first named the small fried fritters: “pets de nonne“ or “nun’s farts”! Really. Regardless of whatever you call these delicious doughy sweet treats, the palette(s) they inspire are beyond fun to create!

Color in Clothing: Swipe Right for Ugly Sweaters with Happy, Rainbow Hues

Here it is, mid-January already, and chances are that the majority of us Colourlovers attended at least one ugly sweater party during the recent December holiday season. Besides being a silly and fun way of dressing up in ridiculously wacky (and in most cases, super tacky!) attire, these festivities are also filled with, you guessed it, a dazzling array of rainbow hues (albeit housed in hideous threads!) We've gathered some of our favorite ugly sweater samples, alongside our created palettes which they inspired, for your viewing pleasure (and benign ridicule?). Feel free to jump in with photos and palettes of your own--we'll make a party out of it :)

We have to believe that good-natured President Obama would be a good sport about being featured (donning bedazzled Christmas bulb earrings and all) on this holiday-inspired ugly sweater. From its crimson tinsel to its 3-D lime and green poinsettia petals, this sweater displaying the departing POTUS--complete with his shiny, dangling jewelry--is nothing short of spectacular.

This ugly sweater definitely takes us back, offering a oh-so-bright and colorful nod to nostalgia, and all things adolescence.

NOSIN' AROUND

With wintry weather comes cold and frigid temperatures, low degrees which leave apparently even reindeer noses rosy and red in the chill. This ugly sweater, featuring who we can only assume is the most famous reindeer of them all, has Rudolph's nose rivaling any circus clown's fire engine-inspired schnoz, and not to mention, he's surrounded by a sea of blue, and polk dots to boot!

BOA-D TO THE BONE

Gold, sparkling tinsel. Neon pink feathers. Need we say more? Here is one ugly sweater that is no slouch when it comes to going all out in adornment! Let's just say, especially when taking a gander at its bubblegum hue-larious color, this sweater just tickles us pink!

HO HO HODGEPODGE

Merriam Webster defines the word "hodgepodge" as being "a confused mixture of several different things," which is exactly why our chosen moniker for the mayhem that scarcely contained in this ugly sweater is nothing short of sheer perfection. From its jolly bright red ribbons and bows to the bearded Santas swinging from its sleeves, and even right down to the edible candy canes careening their crooked necks down the collar and torso, this quirky Christmas sweater is one Ho Ho Hodgepodge that has us smiling from ear to ear.

TINSEL TOWN

While the mention of "Tinsel Town" may initially make most think of the glitz and glamour of Hollywood with its iconic bright lights and film-worthy cameras, our December-inspired ugly sweater raises a no-less-equal amount of hoopla in its own rite! Can we say sparkle?!

BLUE CHRISTMAS BLING

Wearing this snazzy, colorful number, the ONLY thing blue about you will be your holiday attire. Maybe a bit over the top, you ask? Nah!

BLING CROSY

The iconic and beloved Bing Crosby stars in one of our all-time favorite Christmas films--one we watch every year as a family tradition in fact! And while good ole' Bing's film pays tribute to a White (snow-filled) Christmas, this ugly sweater--infused with vivid burgundy, cherry red, gold, and green tones--inspires a spinoff name that is decidedly more colorful, and fun!

UGLY BOO-TIFULL

And before you go figuring all ugly sweaters have to be Christmas-themed, behold the eh, beauty (?) of this color-bedecked gem! Although the colors are bright and indeed merry (who can gaze at such neon splendor and not at least crack an amused smile?), this decidedly Halloween-inspired creation, while not quite beautiful in the conventional sense, could indeed be dubbed "Boo-tifull!"
