Colorful Economic Indicators: The Lipstick Index

Colorful Economic Indicators: The Lipstick Index

Now that most experts have dropped the 'R' word in regards to the U.S. economy, we thought we should take a look at one of the more colorful economic indicators, the Lipstick Index. Which is this: the purchase of cosmetics - mainly lipstick - is inversely correlated to the health of the economy. The idea being that during troubled economic times women are less likely to buy items such as dresses, bags and shoes and will go for a less expensive item for a quick consumption high. The term is credited to Estee Lauder chairman Leonard Lauder who first used the term to explain the rise in cosmetic sales after the September 11th attacks. And according to the New York Times lipstick sales have risen 40% in the last few months. So, here are 18 of the recent most popular colors of lipstick.

What do women want when they aren’t allowed to want too much? Traditional lipsticks in more-sheer neutral shades; the bright reds of days gone by have been replaced by pinky browns and rosy taupes.

Color Trends: Grey

Color Trends: Grey

Our good color loving friends over at Etsy are all about gray at the moment and sent along this post to share. Along with their grey fashion trends we'll take a look at some website designs, and palette inspiration from the CL library.

Earl Grey. Grey Gardens. Gray's Anatomy. Besides these many varied instances, grey (or gray, depending how you spell it) is quite the trend as of late. From clothing to accessories, grey captivates the imaginations of fashionistas the world over. Maybe it's because it's a midway point between black and white, or maybe just because of its neutral qualities — grey just seems to work with everything (and doesn't have to be thought of as gloomy to get the job done). Here's to our new favorite color!

The color green is also the most noticed color out of any other in the color spectrum. The variations of this color are amazing; starting from a soft pale seafoam green all the way on up to the darkest of greens, hunter green. So... basically there  pretty much is a shade of green that will make us all happy. Color Trends: Navy Blue

Our good color loving friends over at Etsy sent along this post to share with our community. The post highlights current fashion in the maritime color of navy blue. Along with Etsy's fashion update, we'll take a look at some other navy blue trends in website design, and palette inspiration from the CL library.

Etsy Spotlight on Navy Blue

I've got kind of a "thing" for the color navy blue. Like the classic song by Diane Renay, I've been thinking a lot about the color, sailors, ships and all things marine. This collection of navy blue clothing salutes the origin of the color's name, as well as all the great fashion on Etsy.

A Graphic History Of The Color Pink

No other color in modern history has carried such gravitas when it comes to associations with masculinity, femininity and politics. The color pink a vessel for weighty subject material, indeed. Especially when you consider the fact that it has only been around in its proper form for less than 500 years. Who knows what the future for this light shade of red will hold, but this info graphic created by Voltage Creative covers the last hundred years of politics and pop culture in all things pink.

Color In Marketing: Sony Bravia Videos

Color In Marketing: Sony Bravia Videos

Sony has been hailed for their imaginative advertising for Bravia their line of high-definition LCD televisions. Since the launch of that stream of 50,000 colorful balls bouncing down a San Francisco street to their latest, bold colored dominoes tumbling through India, here is a look at all of those colorful commercials.

Dominos

This advertising campaign was launched in October 2008. Shot on location in India’s states of Rajastan and Uttar Pradesh. The 60 second Dominoes video takes viewers on a journey on a tumbling journey of color, from a magnificent fort in Jaisalmer through a desert all the way to the Taj Mahal in Agra. The music for the spot was created by Song Zu and Darker My Love's Rob Barbato.

Color + Design: The World's Most Valuable Stamps

Color + Design: The World's Most Valuable Stamps

Since the first self adhesive stamp (the Penny Black, made in 1840 featuring the bust of Queen Victoria) stamp designs have been one of the most highly visible designs in society, one that is particularly important since it represents the nation it comes from.

Today we are featuring some stamps from around the world that you will probably never come across, and if you did you would be quite happy because of their value, along with info about the history of stamp design.

The most common types of stamp designs are Portrait bust, Emblem, Numeric, or Pictorial.

Color & Stamps

Although multi-color printing was always possible, and may be seen on the earliest stamps of Switzerland, the process was slow and expensive, and most stamps were in one or two colors until the 1960s.

World's Most Valuable Stamps

Post Office Mauritius, 1847
It is estimated that fewer than 30 individual copies of these stamps have survived and they are valued at between $600,000 or more depending on the condition of the particular stamp being sold. In 1993 a cover bearing 2 of these stamps sold for a whopping $3.8 million, the highest price ever paid any philatelic item.

Sweden Three Skilling Banco, Yellow Color Error, 1855
The three skilling stamp (yellow color error) was issued in Sweden in 1855. Due to a printing error, this stamp is printed on yellow colored paper (meant for the eight skilling stamp of the same set) instead of the usual green color (used for the three skilling stamp). One copy of the yellow error variety of this stamp was found in 1885 by a young Swedish boy in his grandfather's collection. It is a one-of -a- kind rarity, as no other copies have been discovered to date. In 1996 the stamp was sold to an anonymous collector for $2.3 million at auction.

U.S. Franklin Z-Grill, 1867
This stamp is the rarest of all U.S. stamps, as only 2 copies are known to exist. These stamps depict a portrait of Benjamin Franklin and are embossed with a "Z-Grill" - being a pattern of tiny squares embossed into the paper and visible on the back of the stamps. The purpose of the "Z-Grill" was to permit the canceling ink to be absorbed into the stamp paper thus preventing those who wanted to cheat the post from washing out cancellation marks. The use of "Z-Grills" was not found to be practical and the practice was soon discontinued. An 1868 1 cent "Z-Grill" stamp sold for $930,000 in 1988.
