oh i knew it! i also knit on a domestic machine and i also do a lot of very chunky handknits. for one of my samples i used fine elastic yarn with a very thin Japanese wool and knit in stripes and pick it up on the elastic like a honeycomb pattern once finished i felt it and you get a 3d structure almost identical to your template. that is why i asked as it reminded me of it so much.
