I have never been to Georgetown Cupcakes, but I drive past them many times each month. Now, I guess I have to go.

At home sick this weekend, I stopped by the pharmacy to get my prescription and saw the Valentine clearance items. There were pink pot holders, assorted heart shaped candies, cookie cutters and decorated plastic goody-bags. There were also cupcake papers! Everything was half off. I found a silicone cupcake baking form (they would call it a "tin" if it was made from metal) and some pink pancake mix! I am going to mix my corn muffin mix with the pancake mix and bake the combination in the "tin"/forms. I am so excited. I cannot wait for brunch - 2 - 3 more hours from now.

omg! i have been there and the cupcakes are sooooo good! everyone should go there- their cupcakes are, like, the height of gourmet.

i agree with ketisse. donuts are mainly associated with breakfast. i still love cupcakes, no matter what's in and what's out!

OK - all this talk about muffins and cupcakes made me go there. GEORGETOWN CUPCAKES is the posh cupcake shop that happens to be right here in my town. If you are craving the best cupcakes in the United States, this is the spot, and they ship almost anywhere in the U.S. They have a pumpkin flavor in October and November.

There are many more distinguishing factors: when I was younger, cupcakes were often made with cake batter and topped with cake icing, while muffins were heavier and thicker (sometimes healthier).
To avoid the mess associated with slicing a birthday cake at the party, bakeries now assemble cupcakes on a tray and spread icing over all of them. Once the candles are blown out, the individual cupcakes are easily pulled away from what looks like a whole cake. No knife... pre-portioned sizes... less mess.

Muffins can be savory instead of sweet. I make corn muffins from scratch. The expensive, gourmet, boutique cupcake menus now include savory options (i.e.: maple bacon cupcakes).

It's muffins when there's no toppings and cupcakes when there's toppings? Now I finally know the difference between those two words :D News always try to catch the trend.. Usually they can't in my opinion :)
Associate donuts to breakfast? Well that I can understand if they aren't those sugar frosted ones.

I think that cupcakes (well distinguished from muffins here in the U.S.A. mainly by the presence of a topping) are not in any danger. People still love them and line up to get them. I think that the news reporters are trying to catch a trend before anyone else and "blow it up". The report I saw could have held the caption: "Could donuts be the next big thing?" I think donuts are too much associated with breakfast and cupcakes are more like a dessert for after lunch or dinner. People also give them as gifts.

Really? :O Because here in Finland it feels to like it's all about the muffins and cupcakes.. :D oh well donuts and cupcakes are just as delicious <3
