The current pollution pattern in the world is most negative for vegetation growth in region that are far north (35N or above ) or far south (35S or above).
cold, acidic condition prevails. There's no easy cure for that.
So far it seems the tropical regions down to about 30th parallel (in some less polluted regions only) have healthier plants if they are well maintained, because there are less variation in temperature.
i.e. no freeze or extreme heat for the native plant.

O! As for color... in the spring I did notice last Spring the leaves did change back to Autumn once or twice, a fake start of spring into summer. This is not healthy growing patterns. I think at some point the tree growth with become effected as to not grow many leaves at all with the drastic change in temperature, growth may become stunted thinking its going back to fall, and grow too tiny a leaf for summer.
I alsow notice PIne needles are turning brown the side of the Pinetree that faces the highways I believe to be happening due to pollution from the exhaust of vehicles.
And I am still not certain what killed my three plush bushes outside this past year.
No green means no oxygen.

Yellow/Red/dark magenta leaf is indeed sporadic in 2011.03.06 . most shrubs have some leaves changed colors, with faster growth than normal.
tree growth is slower than normal.
very different from usual fall colors--- it is a humid/fog version.
widespread green leaves, supposed to be green starting from 2010.12 , but abnormally yellow in general.
So far I've recorded the first red leaf sighting of 2011 in 2011.03.03
ornamental plants with year-round dark magenta leaves are not included.
I am not sure whether it is normal, or as a result of abnormal dry, wet or cold condition in 2011.01 and 2011.02. (not sure what the plants prefer )
