Winter's Breath

Winter this year was a long time coming
We waited
Sometimes daring to enjoy its absence
But mostly just
Holding our breath.

Snow fell last night
Wet and heavy

Now, morning and a lace tablecloth
Draped askew o’er the town.
Now we can breathe out
Each in our own time
Watch the clouds of relief form from our lips
And learn again to breathe in
The winter air.
