The Dream of the Melting Puppies

Do you dream in color? If so when did you first realize that you did? For me it happened around age six. At that time I had a dream that our neighbor's little dog had a litter of pups--quite unusual pups at that. They were cute spotted puppies with markings similar to a Calico cat. What made them most unusual and considerably more wonderful to my child's eyes were their colors. Their markings were various pastels colors quite like those of the crayons I played with on a daily basis.

Of course I wanted one. Knowing my mother might need some convincing, I gathered up four or five puppies and took them home to show her. I was completely certain that once she saw how marvelous their colors were she would be as eager as I to adopt at least one of them. (I of course would have liked to have the entire litter.) To my despair, Mom was not in the least impressed with my beautiful pastel puppies. Not only did she refuse my request to adopt one but she did something very odd. She had been mopping the kitchen floor and tossed the bucket of water on those pretty pastel puppies! Horror of horrors the puppies immediately began to melt. Very soon there was nothing left but puddles of pastel colors running into each other. When I woke I
remembered those colors very vividly and was very angry with my Mom for days after.

From then on whenever someone asked me if i dream in color, I could reply without hesitation: "Yes I'm absolutely certain that I do."

Yes it would be sad not to dream in color. I think the dream I described here was memorable mostly because of the colors of those melting puppies. That dream inspired my life-long
interest in dreams and lucid dreaming.

When I was six or so, I had a strange dream, too: I was sitting on the steps in front of the house we lived in. A man came by, looked at me, and then pointed a pistol at me and shot me down. Last thing I saw was, everything turned black. Then I woke up frightened.

Thank you for the nice comment about this palette. My dream was not so tragic as yours, from mine I awoke with knowing I dream in color.
