In classical Greece Hippeios Colonus (or Kolonos), situated near Plato's Academy, had a temple of Poseidon and a sacred grove.

According to Greek mythology, King Oedipus was buried there, as described by Sophocles, who was himself born in Kolonos.

Today it is a densely populated working-class area of the Municipality of Athens.
