Edith, I can always rely on you to reason things out. But how do the contaminants get into the vortex in the first place?

Well... um... a clean vortex is one in which contaminants are cycled out, as opposed to cycling in. That sounds plausible. I guess it's something like a blender, that you clean with a little soap while it's running? Maybe?
