i've known for a long time too. when i told my husband i didn't want a diamond he was so pleased - from a social standpoint, not a finanacial one. i like emeralds (my birthstone) uncut. i like the natural looking stuff better than shiny things. i'm an earth woman...

There was still apartheid then and I never thought diamonds were pretty anyway. Too common.

I knew this for a long time. I worked for NW Ayer in the eighties and knew the history. Women used to get watches, cars for engagement presents. When I got engaged in 1981, I got dolls as an engagement present. My future mother in law said buy her a diamond anyway but I refused.
