CHIC challenge this week: create a palette reflecting your favorite word and incorporating the lovely colour "Bright Eyes" by isabella-crayons. With so many favorite words, of course I couldn't just create one answer to this challenge. *s*
The word "sjtruufje" is one of those words that I rarely ever NEED to use but I love the sound of it so much that I use it whether the context of the conversation requires it or not. *yes I'm crazy that way and it's fun lol*
Sjtruufje (schtroof-yuh) is that lil patch of hair on your head that never lays down. Brush it, wet it, spray it, brush it again and it still springs back up. :)
Sjtruufje is from Kerkrade dialect. The word is derived from a local language in "the Roderland" - a former geographic area consisting of parts of very southern areas of Holland and German cities across the border from there. It's not correct to classify it as German nor is it correct to classify as it as Dutch. My German husband that lived most of his life in Holland (his immediate family still lives there) is very passionate about this dying language. Kerkrade dialect IS a language with its own dictionary, theater group, literature, etc. Most European countries have local languages next to the official country language but strangely enough, the English speaking countries do not.
For my Dutch friends, please forgive my pathetic attempt at a phonetical way to assist readers in pronouncing sjtruufje. Hopefully, you can still get some idea of what it sounds like. *s* This palette really incorporates everything that I feel about my other home and family in Kerkrade and yes, the sjtruufje part is reflected in how something so beautiful as that language just still refuses to conform to today's world. :) I love that!
