Occupation
Hello all. As the title says, I'm a blossoming artist. Currently I am an aspiring professional costume designer, and have been doing a few gigs here and there for costume design on the stage. I also aspire to be an actress, singer and artist, and have been enjoying creating colors and patterns since fall of 2010 and wish to turn those patterns into fabrics.
My love of color, art, and movies started out with a love of....movies. In high school, because I had my own job but no bills to pay, I had a lot of money to burn on movies. At that time (early 2000s), I was fascinated by the special effects, costume and bright colors of movies like Coraline, Finding Nemo, Lord of the Rings, Kill Bill, Pirates of the Caribbean, Big Fish, The Last Samarai and Memoirs of a Geisha. Sometimes I went to the movies by myself and sometimes with friends. I know that I should have gone to the beach, but I lived in landlocked Abilene (north central Texas) and the nearest beach was a good 8 hour drive away. After I graduated from high school in 2004, I wanted to pursue a career in movie special effects. So, I went off to college.
I had once started off doing graphic design, but gave it up after just a year and a half of study, I hated it that much. I did not get along with the professor or the classmates, and have a dislike for computers and anything that would turn into an office job. I felt like I had no creative liberty and that I was chained to a desk. I felt mentally stifled and emotionally drained, like a wrung sponge and by the summer of 2008, chose to no longer continue with it, and instead pursued 2D studio art with a side in costume design and theatre.
I graduated from ACU in the spring of 2010 and will be pursuing my MFA in theatre design or costume design as soon as a I choose where I wish to go (Texas Tech in Lubbock is the closest university to me that has what I want). There is also the decision to go to FIDM in Los Angeles, that has a great Film and TV Costume Design program that I am very interested in pursuing. It's a big decision: Texas Tech, which is close to home and has all the amenities that I want, or FIDM in LA that is right in the industry that I wish to be a part of.
My favorite mediums in art are drawing, painting and sewing, and I also love art history and fashion history. My favorite movies are musicals, period pieces, horror and comedy, and I also love the work of Tim Burton, Quentin Tarantino and Rob Zombie (movie directors) and the work of Colleen Atwood (Lemony Snicket, Sweeney Todd) and James Acheson (Dangerous Liaisons, Restoration, Spiderman) (costume designers).
