The Frederick News-Post caught up with Banks telephone last week while she was in Nashville. Since going there in 1997, the singer-songwriter splits her time between the states and Canada, where she toured with Reba McEntire. Sara Evans captured your song "Saints and Angels." She sang it once she was in Frederick recently. Can you remember the first time you heard one of the songs on the radio? It was a crazy experience hearing it come via the car speakers (Read more: best 6.5 car speakers on the market Carspeakerland.com). It was three years ago, and that I was earning $12,000 annually. ... I flipped it up, as happens when the radio is loud, I received to go extremely fast and got pulled over. The officer, I am sure, had heard that earlier. I understood Nashville was that the songwriting mecca of music and also the area to be to find out about the craft. Even artists that aren't in a country record and compose here. It's where to go for this. I knew I needed to become a songwriter for a dwelling. This was my objective. I inadvertently found my way to producing my own records. I'd songwriting for a decade before I did this. Any thoughts of moving back to Canada?
No! I am too hooked on the songwriting community. I have always done it using a songwriter's mindset ... tell the story behind the song. It's about being in Nashville, a romantic style of performing. (For your Hagerstown show) it'll be me with just two background acoustic musicians that sing harmony. I attempt to dig a little deeper than the normal country song lyrics of a song you'd hear on the radio ... lyrics which ask questions about life. The past couple of years, I have been through mourning my mom's passing and out of being in an abusive relationship. That's what music is for, linking with those feelings. It's good therapy. What was this like? I've sort of an eccentric family. In the summer it was just like a cabin place. In the winter we'd become very snowed in. We had to amuse ourselves. We read a great deal of poetry and sort of performed every other (songs and readings). I didn't understand any music past 1940 before I went into school and discovered it! You will find quotes on each page of your website. They're from song lyrics in my record. I gather quotes because they inspire some ideas. As a songwriter, you need to walk round with your antennae tuned all of the time. Songwriting is much more of a lifestyle than a career. I take a voice recorder to accumulate those ideas. I wrote "City of Dreams" to a plane which was circling to property in Nashville. It was night, and that I was hoping to sing pretty softly in my voice recorder while those around me were sleeping.
They're all me in different ways. My personal favourite on the new album is that the last one, known as "The Other Side" It woke me up one night and wouldn't allow me to move back to sleep till it was composed. It's about passing ... 'pour me out at a fall breeze.' A couple of years after I sang it in my mother's funeral. It was a song she actually loved, and that I wrote a couple years until she died. My mother was my biggest fan. Life will throw the good things and the bad things in you in precisely the same moment. Some other singer-songwriters have told me that they had been also a big fish in a small pond within their hometown. When they got to Nashville, they felt just like small fish in a bigger pond. (Laughs) I came to Nashville with a massive amount of humility because I understood it was where legendary songwriters are made. The level of talent is just so large in Nashville.

I still go out to listen to my heroes (songwriters) perform. It's a tough business plus also a roller coaster ride. You never know from month to month the way you are likely to earn a living. You need to remember to observe the successes of your peers. If one person succeeds, it raises us up. Who are some of the songwriting heroes? Don Schlitz (that co-wrote "If You Say Nothing in All"), Tia Sillers (who composed "I Hope You Dance") and Matreca Berg ("Strawberry Wine"). (Matreca) is among the biggest reasons I pur
