Drift Studio Table Design Contest

Drift Studio Table Design Contest

Howdy COLOURlovers! It's been a little while since our last contest, but we have a great excuse -- we've been working with the folks at Drift Studio to cook up something special we think you're going to enjoy. :)

Drift Studio is an incubator for design and product ideas. Their mission is to create elegant and thoughtful products that marry form and function while offering something more – the ability to personalize. Attention to detail, quality materials and craftsmanship form the foundation of furniture you can be proud of.

For this contest, Drift Studio is excited to engage the COLOURlover's community to help design tops for its new line of coffee tables, Riff Tables. A coffee table can be one of the most central focal points of a room's decor. Use your creative juices to create a conversation piece that will look great and display your unique personality!

How to enter

This contest is open to all COLOURlovers. To enter, visit the Drift Studio Table Design Contest page and submit your best patterns and color palettes to design a tabletop. Entries are limited to a maximum of three per person.

Contest dates

The entry period for this contest starts today, November 5th, and ends on Tuesday, November 13th. Voting for submissions will remain open until Thursday, November 15th. Winners will be announced here on the blog Friday, November 16th.

Voting process

The first place winner will be chosen by the team at Drift Studio. Second and Third place will be determined based on the number of "loves" received from the community. A Fourth place winner will be chosen at random by the COLOURlovers team.

Prizes

First prize: a Drift Studio table made from the winning design
Second prize: a small table from Drift Studio.
Third prize: a $100 gift certificate that can be used towards the purchase of a table from Drift Studio.
Fourth prize: a $50 gift certificate that can be used towards the purchase of a table from Drift Studio.

**Important shipping note: although the contest is open to our global community, Drift Studio is only able to ship domestically at this time. International winners will need to have a US-based friend receive the product and handle the overseas shipping.**

+++++++

As an added bonus, you can save your tabletop designs and upload them at DriftStudio.com to purchase a table with your very own design. How cool is that!

Have fun everyone, can't wait to see all of your colorful tabletops. :)

I can't help myself in this situation but feel like an alien. It's a contest on our planet, isn't it?I won't delete mine anyway. Not a problem for me to donate in case it reaches the top. This year's been very tough so far and adding to the bad luck wasn't a surprise to me:))

I'd enter the contest just for fun. But that's a great idea!

Sorry about that guys. We tried to make it really clear in the rules. I just quoted shipping a table to London with our shipper and it was $791.66. Ouch. Why don't you still play for the fun of it and if you win donate the table to a nice charity or an underprivileged school that could use it. Then your design will live on and inspire someone who would really appreciate the gift...?

I am so fed up! Like I sed, this is total bull!

Just wanted to tell the team at CL and Drift Studios "Thank You" for once again putting together a fun contest where we are able to share our designs and be recognized in the community while being able to get to know other fellow CL and see all of their beautiful designs as well. I know that it is not always easy to come up with new challenges and I just wanted to express my gratitude for your efforts! Whether I win or loose I am thankful to have this opportunity.

I just entered this into the contest:

I hope it isn't too late to enter. It was very hard to figure out what pattern of mine would make for a great design. I picked colors that I thought would make for a great everyday table and nice warm ones that could match any room. Hope it meets with your approval! I like making designs that incorporate human faces, especially ones that are subtle and mysterious.

My other entries are:
She_Sells_SanctuaryBurgundy_Babe

I would have posted them with the contest layout, but could not get back to my entry pages. In any case, thank you for all consideration!

Just took a look-see through the Drift Studio website! Located in Mount Horeb, WI and in the Madison area?! I want to give a shout out to my fellow Wisconsin designers and artists. Thank you so much for this design contest. Please collaborate more with ColourLovers. You've given me a connection to home. I'm from Stevens Point! Yay! *thrilled*

Great contest idea! I've been hoping we'd get to work with some kind of furniture design.

I only wish I'd heard about it sooner, given the current rules. Since the voting process began as soon as the first entry was submitted (as opposed to starting it after the submission deadline), all entries made after that are essentially penalized by not having as much time in the voting pool. Perhaps future contests can be announced to members via email -- so that everyone has a fair shot? Or maybe just tweak the timing so that voting doesn't begin until the submission process has been closed? Just a couple thoughts.

These probably don't have a chance to catch up on votes at this point, but I enjoyed the industrial design exercise:

How did you get the images of how the design looks on a table?!

I have to agree with you on the idea of voting/loving starting after the submissions are made.

Love your designs and the 3D visual example is awesome! We can really get a good feel for the table itself then. Cheers, Dana

Drift Studio

Hi there. That is an interesting point and something that didn't occur to me. I'm sure Colourlovers will weigh in and be glad to hear your comment. They set the contest structure but I can tell you they really seem to be super committed to their user experience and their community. It has been refreshing actually. One thing I will point out is that the first place prize is picked by Drift Studio and will be done after the last submission, so you definitely have a chance for that. Thanks!

Thanks Dana, glad you agree. And don't get me wrong -- the contests have improved a lot in the last year or two (such as randomizing the gallery). It just needs one small adjustment.

@Tiandu: using graphic design software. (Coming from an agency background, I'm just used to mocking things up. Sometimes creative presents better in it's intended form.)

april_fool1

Hey Brent. The comment about contest structure was for the CL community (team/lovers) -- not directed at you. We usually post feedback like that here so that others can speak up, and so the the CL team will know if there's consensus around something.

Sorry for the confusion!

Drift Studio

Hi Tiandu. You can go to our website at http://driftstudio.com/tables/ and upload your design to see what it would look like on a table. Check it out!

It doesn't work very well? =( What am I missing? It complains the pattern I download from COLOURlovers isn't big enough. Even when I enlarged it so your interface doesn't complain that the image is too small, the pattern is not shown correctly on the table. It hangs off the table, halfway in the air. (I did resize the image before posting it, but didn't want to go too small.) I'm using Firefox 16.0.2 for the record.

Hmmm. Ok. Looks like a browser compatibility issue. Email me what browser you are using and the version which you can find in the about section, to brent@driftstudio.com and we will trouble shoot the problem with you. Probably better over email than via these posts. If you are using safari on an apple, try a SHIFT+CMD+R to reset your cache and see if this helps. We'll get you rolling. This is a new app that we are rolling out with this contest so we just have to make little tweaks when things like this pop up... Thanks.

Replying here as well as emailing. I already told you the browser I am using, here let me bold it. *geeks out*

Oops. Leave it to me to just look at the pictures and not read... duh. Thanks. We're looking into it.
