Earth Friendly Paints

As we become more aware of how things affect our environment and about earth-friendly living,a huge focus has been geared toward non-toxic paints. Being an Interior Designer, I am by any means not a paint expert, but have done some research and have come across some very interesting tidbits that everyone should be aware of, if they are not already.

I have learned that the majority of paints have a degree of toxicity, only egg tempera can really be accepted as completely non-toxic if using non-toxic pigments. Egg tempera is basically pigment paste and egg yolk. The benefits of non-toxic paint are that they are ideal for those with allergies, have a low-odor and are ultimately better for the Earth.

I'd like to emphasize chalkboard paints which are huge right now. This is perfect for kids and have come across some non-toxic paint that come in black, green, red and blue. This brand of paint was created by Sibella Court who teamed up with Murobond paints. So if you are interested, you can click here to get more information. There are so many brands and types of non-toxic paints that would fit your needs. I have found just a few that I hope you will seem to find interesting. We should not only celebrate Earth Day one month out of the whole year, but everyday.

Hi Allison, Thanks for sharing this information. I am one who is allergic to latex along with having multiple chemical sensitivities. For years, whenever we painted I would get real sick...sometimes even getting pneumonia. Even after I found out I was allergic to latex, I didn't think about Latex Paint being a problem. But each time we painted I would get sick. After we made the connection, we started using Kid's Room paint sold at the various big box stores. Proper ventilation or a day or two away from the house seemed to do the trick in not triggering the allergic reaction.
This past December we needed to do some painting in our bathroom. I went to the big box store and tried to find the paint and asked for help when I couldn't find it. The clerk told me that the store had discontinued the line when the economy tanked as there wasn't a demand for this 'more expensive' paint in this economy.
I really appreciate your bringing this info out and especially sharing it among designers too because that will help to raise awareness. One other thing...when painting a baby or a child's room...plenty of "airing out time" is needed, especially for small children and babies as their systems can not handle the toxic overload. When getting a nursery ready, the painting should be done months in advance, as the product off gasses for quite a while. This can be a trigger for many of the immune disorders that so many are affected by. One other thing is that people really need to read the label on the paint cans. It is as though the paint industry covers their butt by putting the info about the chemistry involved in the product knowing full well that people don't really ever read the can.
Thanks again for your post and for helping to inform the public about this product.

Interesting points you make, LauraKangas. I am allergic to eggs, I wonder if egg tempera paints would bother me... like latex does you. I paint as an artist, so I may look more in to the products and brands I use just in case.

Chalkboard paints are quite nice! Gotta love the colors too.

Superb colors as well as a well written post..but i think 1 thing that will make the room complete, and that this should be area rugs which will help refresh the ambience of the room..
