COLOURlovers Interview with Melanie of You Are My Fave

Melanie created You Are My Fave as her creative outlet just 4 years ago. You Are My Fave combines the love she has for decor, crafting and weddings to create some fabulous inspiration for all. The pages of her blog keep you going because you just can't wait to see what else is in store (it also wears out that "Pin It" button with all those awesome photos). Catch up with her on Twitter @youaremyfave.

Let's find out what inspires her, what keeps her going and what got her to this point.

First up, why don't you tell the community a bit about who you are, what you do, how long you have been doing it, and your background.

My name is Melanie. I've been blogging daily at You Are My Fave for the last four years but I do a handful of other things too like throw parties and assist Design Mom. I'm also a pro at watching an entire TV series over the course of one weekend.

I graduated from college in the slacker major of Communications with an emphasis in advertising. After a series of unfortunate jobs, I started my blog and haven't looked back since. Of course the things I learned in my major have helped me with all this social media biz.

What past experiences do you think have contributed the most to where you are now?

First, I think my parent's emphasis on work ethic has helped me tremendously. I had a paper route when I was only eight. Anyone who works for themselves knows it's not easy and if you don't work hard, you won't get anywhere.

Secondly, after losing my first real job out of college I had to humble myself a bit and decide not to pass up an opportunity because I thought it was below me. Working as an assistant to a pro blogger has taught me more than I would have ever hoped for.

What colors and color trends do you think we will see a lot of in wedding in 2012?

You can predict a lot by looking at the trends in fashion. Think a nice mix of saturated brights like tangerine, magenta and mint.

What patterns and trends do you think will be big in 2012?

It seems like chevron, triangles, stripes and dots are all still going strong.

Which colors, patterns & trends are you personally most excited about seeing?

I love the trend of having a more casual vibe to your wedding - think shorter dress lengths, simple ceremonies and a more party than formal vibe at the reception. And I kind of want to put the color orchid into everything right now.

What are your top three color palettes you love to see in a wedding? What colors do you not often see together a lot, but would like to see more of?

mint + poppy + soft peach
mustard yellow + dusty pink
orchid + soft peach + pink peony

I would love to see more of a mix of greens and blues like citron + peacock + emerald.

How important do you think patterns are to a wedding design? What are your favorites?

Just like in home design, I think a mix of patterns, textures and colors is essential for an overall successful look to your wedding. I love ditsy florals like those from Liberty of London. And stripes can go with any theme from French rustic to preppy to circus.

What's the best design-related advice you've ever received?

You know your own style best. Don't let someone deter you away from something you absolutely love.

When you are feeling stumped, where do you turn for inspiration?

Sometimes the Internet is a bit of an inspiration overload so I like to step away for a while and notice my surroundings more. Like today I was searching for home decorating inspiration and I stepped into my closet, picked a few things that I was instantly attracted to and surprise! my color palette was formed.

For someone that is just beginning to plan and design their wedding, what resources or advice would you give to them?

There is A LOT out there. Choose only a couple blogs and/or magazines that you think fit your aesthetic best so you don't get overwhelmed with all of the inspiration. When you're certain that you've found your direction and know what you're doing, stop looking for more ideas unless it's something specific to fit your theme. You might start doubting yourself and usually your first inclination is the right one.

I love 100 Layer Cake, Snippet and Ink and Martha Stewart Weddings of course.

Loved this post. The palettes and patterns she mentioned seem right on trend. I've been seeing mint green everywhere!
