Can I use the colors found in palettes and patterns on my blog or in my work?

You can use the colors found in a palette or a pattern however you want. Note that some users would love to know you've used their colors so don't be shy. :)

Palettes as they are displayed on the site and colorings of patterns are licensed under an Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike Creative Commons License. You can read a simplified version of this license at http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/.

Pattern templates i.e. the original pattern files are copyrighted. If you want to use them for commercial purposes, you will need to find who created the pattern and contact them to see what their terms of use are.

To see if the pattern you want to use has been made by CL or not, open a pattern page then check the description area ("About This Pattern"). If the pattern wasn't created by ColourLovers.com, the name of the creator and a link to their website will be displayed at the bottom.
Most patterns not created by ColourLovers.com are listed at the end of this comment.

But what about my own patterns?

Unless you're the person who created the pattern template, none of these patterns are yours. You simply color them so the same rules apply. :)

I'm still unsure about something. What should I do?

Don't hesitate to contact the CL team to know if you may or may not do something.

Does this mean I can use my own pattern that I designed using COLOURlovers.com on my blog, especially if I comment where I made it?

GreenMyEyes

There's a difference between creating a pattern (i.e., creating the vector paths) and coloring a pattern. If you are the creator of the pattern, you can use it wherever you like. If you want to use a pattern that you colored, you need to look at the bottom of the pattern description, under the heading "This Pattern Originally By:" If it's the name of a fellow color lover, you may use it as you like (as long as you don't use it for commercial use, and attribute its origin). But if the creator is not a CL, you need to contact that person to get permission. Click on the website by the creator's name to find out how to contact them.

What if there IS no "this pattern originally by", for example:
Exclusion

Am I blind? I've searched that page all over and I can't find the creator!

@Silverity

This means this pattern was created by the CL team. If you want to use them for non-commercial purposes then you must abide the CC license terms. Otherwise, e-mail CL via the Contact form.

Thanks for this, I was curious.

I want to print some of my own templates/patterns on paper. HOW do I go about using the .png file? What software even opens it? (And why can't I find an easy answer to this anywhere?) I'm not a graphics designer (but I wish I were), so I am coming at this site from a complete newbie direction, which doesn't seem to be accommodated very well in the "FAQs" (which are not in the least organized, comprehensive, or up-to-date anyway).

(And why is it whenever I post a question like this in a forum, I am not alerted of the reply & cannot find my original post again?)

I love playing here & would like to do more than play, but even as a documentation specialist for software, I cannot for the life of me figure out this website/software!

Assistance & advice, please?

Teddybaird

Can I use a palette that I found on the site for a blog? I'm still confused. Sorry.

I'm wondering how far the non-commercial license goes. If I use a pattern or palette on a webpage that is making a few pennies with AdSense, is that considered commercial, even though the pattern or palette isn't being sold? What if the website doesn't use AdSense but sells other stuff ( not the pattern or palette?
