How can I color a pattern?

In the top navigation menu, click on Patterns ? Create New then choose a category in the Browse More Pattern Styles drop down menu. To select a pattern, click on its thumbnail image. To change its colors, click on the color patches next to the pattern. A box will appear where you can modify them. If you need help using this color mixer, go here to find more detailed instructions.

Can I turn a palette into a pattern?

Yes, you can. Open the palette page then click on 'Create a Pattern with this Palette'. This will open the Add Pattern page and load the colors of the palette automatically. Then, all you have to do is choose your pattern and re-order the colors if you want to.

I have a great idea for a new pattern! Can it be added to the site?

Yes. See this post for details.

I'd really like to know about that myself. It says to email the vector file but that's kind of vague to me. I know what a vector is but I don't know if there's a proper file extension for it (since I usually end up saving my work to be published online as png or gif), if it has to be a certain size, if it needs to be submitted in various grays, etc.

Partial answer: it was said in a previous conversation that it needed to be in .ai or .svg format and created in a vector editor like Adobe Illustrator.

I had never noticed this. That's cool. Thank you.

Also take into account the default size and default colors used for existing patterns.

Sorry, I don't understand what mean "take into account"...
Where I found info what color etc. I use? Or do I just take a colors from pattern templates (these grayscale colors)?

@Zeamar:

That's what I'd do, yes. Don't hesitate to send the team an e-mail if you have more questions, Zeamar as we're not always qualified to answer them here.

This is the link to the Sharing the Love conversation that contains technical specs re: submitting new patterns.

The topic of new pattern submission vexes me somewhat — I have submitted 4 or 5 patterns, and only one has been added to the site (the jumbled letters one). I can't pin down what was different about that one that may have made it viable for the site whereas the other ones were somehow not.

Having downloaded a few pattern swatches from what's available, I've concluded that file size and ratio are flexible - some are square tiles, some are rectangular tiles, some are like 100 px wide, others are closer to 300-400.

Also Zeamar, it's been my conclusion, and I think maybe it was part of what was being implied here, that when you create a pattern swatch for submission, it needs to be colored with #CCC, #999, #666, #333 and #000, because those are the default colors used in the pattern interface on the site.

I would appreciate any more/new ideas if anyone stumbles upon them.

Hello, I am new to Colour Lovers. I 'm wondering if there is a way for me to use a pattern in Illustrator? I am aware that I can't download a pattern to use in Illustrator -- is there a different way to approach this problem?

@coco chanel:

As explained here patterns are not downloadable as such. You can open a small image of the pattern as a .png file by clicking on the 'Download a pattern' link but that will not make it a pattern. Just an image of it.

Hi !!
First of all: I'm sorry if my English isn't very well, but I normally speak Dutch, so that's why.. =)
Now here's my question:
I'd like to make a new pattern, but always if I want to add it, a sign shows up with ''you first have to name the colors..''
But where can I name them? Or do I have to use colors from other people? ö
I hope you'll understand my question.. :$
Thanks!!

Just scroll to the top of the page, S. This will show you the colors that are new to COLOURlovers, and will give you a space for each one to enter a name. When you've entered a name for each unknown color, press enter.
