how do i scale the patterns i create? it is always saved bigger in scale than i want, despite the placement of the scale sliding gizmo, regardless of where it is right before i save it, when i start making the pattern, etc. any help would be appreciated. new to these programs.

The gizmo you refer to acts as a zoom function but does not actually resize anything.

To resize, select all the layers you want to resize with the shift key, then shift-drag the corner of the selected layers inwards to shrink and outward to expand.

Please be careful of layer placement before re-sizing or rotating; if what you are changing overlaps the sides of the pattern box (The bright square in the middle), results will be unpredictable.
