[IF] WORD GUIDELINES
Welcome to IF, Fun Interpretation* !
About every week a word is proposed to be used as inspiration
▶ What?
Words can be anything: Emotions, Objects, Actions, Adjectives, Places... Suggestions are super welcome ! ... sometimes I'm out of ideas =P
▶ Why?
This was the 1st idea of this experimental group.
I first searched for a group that did something similar but didn't find any, so here it is!
And also because sometimes collective creations can be surprising! Coincidences, similarities , opposites can be fun to see...
▶ When ?
About every week or so
▶ Posting
Post your palettes, patterns, related images, poems... ANYTHING! on the IF word page it belongs to manually (see above list of IF words)
Add the IF word tag , IF13 for peacock, IF33 for triangles...
Tags are optional if you manually post your item on the page
Also, only tagged items have a chance to be exposed in the group highlights and specials. (this, because you can easily search & sort them - example)
BADGE:
Each IF word has a badge you can put in the description area of your item.
You can choose any word that inspires you at that moment. You can also post old things, or even someone else's (if the creator doesn't mind.)
Thank you =)

Daily Random Color Challenge [IFRC]
IFRC 2011 SUBMISSIONS HERE
HOW TO PLAY IFRC
1) Use the random color
The latest random color is the last submitted color to this group thread
Optional but advised, you can also
> Add the IFRC tag - so this may show up in the group highlights and on my page - to all palettes and patterns using the RC color( because tags enable to search & sort RC palettes)
This even if you create a pattern using someone else's RC palette.
> Add the IFRC badge, you can find the badge code on the color page of the day - This badge contains all the important links you may need - eg: Clicking on date leads to the RC of this group thread
> Post the palette badge to the group page (screenshot of where to get the palette badge)
Late submissions: Once a new colour is submitted, items created using the previous day's colour can no longer be submitted to the group page.
Late submissions and any items created using passed RC colours can be submitted here and tagged ANYRC + the other tags (tags are comma separated)
SUBMITTING A NEW COLOR
Any member can submit a new color every 24h CTS - starting from 00:01 CTS
Time is calculated according to CST time, this clock:
What Time is CTS for me?
Here's a world map with time zones: TimeTicker - in the bottom right menu select U.S.A./Central U.S.A.
1) First check to see if someone has all ready grabbed a daily color - day starts at 00:00 to 23:59
2A) If there's a color - too late! Try again tomorrow!
2B ) If there's no colour, go grab a random color. For example here: kColors ( or any color generator - see more below)
Get the HEX code's color badge and paste it in the group thread - straight away before you create your palette or else others may submit an other one. (see how to get the badge below)
- If the colour is yours, please also try to tag it IFRC
- If 2 colours are submitted at the same time, like it happened here, it's the first posted comment that counts.
- If a colour is posted too early, it's considered non valid
How to get the colour badge:
To get the color palette of an existing color just type this url followed by the Hex code : www.colourlovers.com/color/hexcode
Example : http://www.colourlovers.com/color/820F00
Or go here and just change the numbers.
If the colour doesn't exist create it : there will be a 'Add this colour' button on the colour page.
I hope you all know this: The HTML code for the color badge is in the sidebar of the colour page
THE RC BADGE
Making the badge and suggesting an image are optional.
But you are welcome to do it!
See how to update the IF badge code
It's is advised to upload a copy of the image here
See how to download an image and upload it here at CL
ABOUT COLORS NAMES
Very quickly it turns out that colour names are important - try to name the colour with an inspiring name - if the random color you fell on already exists but does not have an interesting, inspiring name, try getting a free color by changing the last letter of the hex code.
Also please avoid controversial names & delicate subjects such as politics and religion
PRIZES
There are no winners of course but palettes, patterns and colours with the highest score may sometimes receive a virtual badge like this
NB: This is only possible if palettes, patterns and colors are tagged IFRC!!
-Voilà! That's it! Thank you!

Do you know how to search for photos by HEX code, YCC?
You mean like the 'FIND PHOTOS WITH THIS COLOR' on the color page, and that leads to istockphotos?
No I haven't found were you can search with a HEX code in the page - but you can search RGB by tweaking the URL
At the end it includes the RGB:
Save the Rainforest HEX: #729E51 RGB: 114/158/81
www.istockphoto.com/search/?facets={"4":"114,158,81"}
Mouse Click Button HEX: #F55F34 RGB: 245/95/52
www.istockphoto.com/search/?facets={"4":"245,95,52"}
Not sure what the 1st "4" is for, maybe the range or something.
I have not seen any precise color search engine by hex code - The above list of color search engines are the only I know
There's also Google color search options, very basic but better than nothing
+ Now you can upload images and it'll tell what it finds! =D
Why upload a copy of image you found on the web?
Using images found on the web as-is without hosting it yourself is called "hotlinking" or 'bandwidth theft (see here)John McCain Busted for Hotlinking
In 2007, John McCain's Myspace page used hotlinked images without permission.
Since he was running for president, you can just imagine how much bandwidth that used!
The graphics' owner fought back by replacing one with an embarrassing and amusing image.
McCain is lucky. Many people replace hotlinked graphics with something obscene.
Dear Anna, according to the new guidelines, it says we should avoid color names that have to do with politics and religion. I don't think anyone had a problem with my Easter color, but in the future, should I try to avoid names like that? It didn't even occur to me that it might be controversial. I don't think it was seeing as how many people "loved" the color and participated! :-) I agree that the name of the color shouldn't be something like 5032 or whatever. So boring!
sundancer: If you notice I did not participate that day as did some others. I think that it is A-OK for you to use a color with that name in your own palette. But as the RC color of the day, you need to realize we are a very diverse community. Folks from all over the world are on CL with many different religious and political beliefs. And seeing as those are the most controversial subjects, it makes good sense to try to avoid this in a group that is not about that. And you are right, many folks were agreeable to your color name, as they must be christian. But not all in the group are. And this is Anna's group and she is moderator and her rules apply. I think Anna is trying her best to keep all things equal as much as possible and I am grateful to her for realizing that this indeed a diverse group.
However, if you feel like creating your own group for Christians, that is truly a good idea as you can be assured that those in that group will be acceptable to creating in that realm.
Cheers, sweetie! :)
I imagine some may think it's over reacting but I thought it to be a controversial colour name because I received satisfied and unsatisfied notes.
Someone said if we accept that we could also have color names for other religions... so before anything like happened, I preferred to add that line in the guidelines
As for all rules it's hard to decide a clear limit - at an extreme point anything could be turned religious - even a simple apple! I think an apple would be exaggerated and I hope you do too. So I rely on you all, in your good will to understand what is and is not controversial and keep in mind that we're an international community.
Above all, let's not be too serious and have fun! =D
I also wish I had more time but only because I love this place so much and could easily spend every minute of every day here and never be bored! :)
Also, I am another person who totally agrees with Trixxie above.
Just two little things I wanted to say,
Firstly, in response to the "controversial colours" issue, I think it's important to understand that, particularly when it comes to colours with specific religious connotations, it's not simply that people may be offended by your choice but also that many people are aware of the sensitivity of this subject and are concerned about offending others.
For instance, if somebody posted a colour relating to Passover or Ramadan, I (as a Christian) would not be at all offended but I probably would not participate because, even though I have studied both Judaism and Islam at university and know a bit about them, I am aware that they are outside of my personal faith experience and I would be concerned that any palette I attempted to make relating to those religions might be seen as offensive to Jews or Muslims, even if it was not intended as so. Does that make sense? My point is that I think it is always prudent to err on the side of sensitivity with regards to this topic.
Secondly, the "colour submission time" issue. I think it makes things a little bit difficult and confusing for people (especially newbies) that the clock (as awesome as it is) is buried halfway down this long and complex (though again, awesome and very helpful) thread. If I may therefore make a suggestion ycc that you start a new thread which has nothing but the clock (and maybe brief submission instructions) in it. Call it "The RC Clock" in big bold letters so that it is easily visible and accessible. I think that would help quite a bit to clear things up. It's worth a try at least:)
Thankyou for all your fabulous work ycc and colour on lovely peeps!
Peace Out, Luna Rosa:)
Oh my goodness is this confusing and long....I joined thinking it would be fun and then realized I don't know what the heck is going on. Pardon my stupidity but I just can't understand a word of it and it's in Engllish, lol. But seriously you guys must be geniuses to understand and actually do all this whatever it is. Kudos to all of you but I will not be participating for one thing I don't even have the time to read all the guidelines etc. Some peeps must have a lot of time on their hands. Wish I had some of their hands!!
Yes, there is a lot and you don't need to read all the guidelines, It's more to have rules for when there's a problem.
So one can say: "see here, I didn't just make this rule up now! It's the same for everybody!"
and for time: it was started over a year ago.
What language do you speak best?
As well as mentioning the forum thread "Make as many patterns with your palette" - that is a bit mis leading as to who's palette you make patterns with - it is the previous players submission.... wish I could change the title.
:)
I just cut off the end - is that OK?
PS: If the comments turn the page - I'll delete them! Just leave what I think the most useful.
When COLOURlovers gets the opportunity to address these layout and functionality tools of the groups, it'll be nice. :)
As always ycc2106, great job! m.
