ABOUT COLORS

COLORS & EMOTIONS
As you may know I'm doing some research on colors and emotions.
Here are some nice infographies you may enjoy looking at like me.
I would have a lots to say about them but it would be very long... (I may put my writings here when I'm finished.)

SOFTWARE: PATTERN EDITOR-GENERATOR
Found this to be quit incredible:

Agony is a free (very complete but quit complex) windows application to generate beautiful colourful patterns, fractals, animated patterns, 3D images and more (only for windows)

If it's too complicated there are simpler apps :
djuhn : , savagery: , vexer , I think Agony include all these.
NB: The website provides indispensable tutorials

For Mac, see : Repeating Motif Generator
BTW, talking about editors, here's a special one: Sketch Chair, just to design chairs! (mac/linux to come)

Color cycling
Color cycling : Animation effect using colors
From Wikipedia:
Color cycling, also known as palette shifting, is a technique used in computer graphics in which colors are changed in order to give the impression of animation. This technique was mainly used in early computer games, as storing one image and changing its palette required less memory and processor power than storing the animation as several frames.

Joe Huckaby of Effect Games has been playing around with color cycling, leading to some stunning effects : Canvas Cycle: True 8-bit Color Cycling with HTML5

Anyone remember Color cycling from the 90s? This was a technology often used in 8-bit video games of the era, to achieve interesting visual effects by cycling (shifting) the color palette. Back then video cards could only render 256 colors at a time, so a palette of selected colors was used. But the programmer could change this palette at will, and all the onscreen colors would instantly change to match. It was fast, and took virtually no memory.

The New Black: Blacker than black

FASHIONISTAS take note: this material really does deserve to be labelled the new black - it absorbs virtually all the light that hits it.

This "blacker than black" stuff is an example of a class of substances known as metamaterials, which exhibit optical properties not normally found in nature.
Metamaterials consist of a regular array of two or more tiny components, each smaller than the wavelengths of the light they interact with. It is this array-like internal structure that gives them their unusual properties.

It's a very interesting surface to look at because it's so black
Dr Richard Brown, NPL

It reflects 10 to 20 times less light than current coatings and has a number of applications in astronomy, such as on star trackers, which help spacecraft navigate.

Scientists at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in Teddington, West London, say it could also be used on our planet.

Several artists are said to be keen to use the new material because it is incredibly beautiful, "like black velvet".

CL STATISTICS! =)
Colors of the Social World
By looking at the more than 1 Million people who have used our Themeleon tool to design their Twitter Profile in the past 3 months, we were able to paint a picture of the world connecting colors to locations and profile data. Below is a visual guide to what we found: What we noticed first was that a huge majority of people don't wander that far off from Twitter's default light blue colors... and then we went digging deeper.

Webexhibits has many section on colours, like Pigments through the Ages - detailed pigment histories, recipes
You'll find Interactive pages, symbolism, Visualisations, Timeline, photos, painting... Really nicely made. =)

"This exhibit includes most important pigments used through the early 20th century.

In a microscope, we see that paintings and other painted objects consist simply of pigments suspended in a substance – like chips in a chocolate chip cookie. The "substance" can vary, from oil or egg yolk in paintings, to plaster in frescos, or sophisticated plastics in automobile finishes. Moreover there are many interesting relationships between pigments (the focus of this exhibit) and dyes, and even with the "visual pigments" found in our own eyes."
