I'm typically iffy about top friend features on social networks-- among my offline friends, they seem to be a vehicle for drama and some neuroses, the kinds of tensions that a concept as simple as the internet should not be allowed to foster.

But the more I think about it, I have a lot of friends here that I'd love to show some gratitude by adding them to the pantheon-- but definitely more than 5. :-\

To give freely of your visions is an act of LOVE. What is a top 5 to me is different that what it would be to you or yours. That is the Glory of Art. In this place everyone can be a top 5 to someone. I Love that.

I really do not live the idea of identifying your top 5 lovers, for the same reasons as codename_gimmick wrote. Plus, if you have someone on your top five list and then replace that person with another lover, this could easily result in hurt feelings. Although I have a little red heart, I don't and won't identify my top 5 lovers. Instead of honoring a friend by putting him/her on your top 5, why not make them a tribute palette instead?

I use my top five as a vehicle to keep tabs on the lovers who's work I admire most. Since their icons are always on my front page, it's a simple click to check out what they're up to. As all of our tastes change over time, I expect my top five will change from time-to-time. It's nothing personal, it's just who's work I happen to like most right now...

While, like buningrl33, I might find it nice to use the top 5 as way to keep tabs on particular folks, I can't bring myself to do the tops thing either.

I suppose one could just include links to the people you want to keep track of on your profile. not sure that is much different than making someone a "top".
