Rating System

Kaleidosc…

I asked in another thread how CL rating system works. Klip gave me a link to the main page. Which was a HUGE help (thanks Klip), but now, just my suggestion:

I still think there's more to it.
Example: I would think there would be points for someone marking a color/palett/patten as their favorite??? (Especially since a comment isn't always a good thing. I would think marking it a favorite, would count as more.) I would also think views would count as something too. Maybe I should mention my thoughts in the other thread for new feature requests.

Something like this:

SUBMITTING
creating a new color/palett/pattern: 5

SOMEONE ELSE'S:
favoriting: 3
commenting: 2
voting: 1

NEW LOVER
adding someone: 1
someone added you: 2

PROFILE COMMENTS:
Commenting on a profile: 2
Comments on your profile: 1

YOURS:
views: equal to number of views (you must of at least caught their eye to make them click on it)
commented: 2 (since comment is not always good & since not all comments are equal)
added as favorites: 2
voted: equal to number of voties

I think the site wants to encourage creation and interaction. That's why these give you more points. People generally vote and/or fave because it's easy and fast to do so but not as much comment very often. Comments are usually very much appreciated, I believe. It's also how you learn more about people and make new 'friends'. I like the current rating system.

Edit: to me, it doesn't make much sense to give point to faving and voting because I always vote when I fave.

I'm satisfied with the current point system for lover-ranking but, I've sometimes been confused by the palette ranking because I don't know how all the votes, views, comments and favorites factor in. Maybe just some clarification is needed in that case.

A couple things that should probably change IMO are getting points for self-voting and getting points for comments that are palette badges only.

Its cool that those things count toward rank of the item, but getting points for them doesn't seem right if the goal is to encourage interaction

I guess the reason faving is not included is because of the monthly wipe of votes. You dont want the faves to be wiped monthly do you? :)

And if faves were included in the calculation and not wiped, some palettes would just go up in the rankings and stay there - and older palttes would always do better than new ones.

Although I suppose they COULD only count faves that were placed after the first day of each month, so that the rating only considers "fresh" faves...

Ratings are... overrated. :P

-- I wonder how many people really comment just for the points??? I never comment JUST for points. It's either deserved or not (good or bad - although I've never left negative feed back yet).

People generally vote and/or fave because it's easy and fast to do so but not as much comment very often.
-- People who just mark "Favorite" instead of commenting... hmmm... so you're saying they're lazy? Maybe it's not that. Maybe it's just simiply that good & words aren't needed. I comment on WAY more work than I do mark "Favorites". Favorites means exactly that, it is one of my favorites.

-- No, I wouldn't want the "Favorites" cleared each month, since I like to reference my favorites, no matter how long it's been. That's why I feel "Favorites" should count as more.

Comments are usually very much appreciated, I believe. It's also how you learn more about people and make new 'friends'. I like the current rating system.
-- I agree, but do we really needs point to motivate us to comment someone's work??? I understand giving us a point for commenting. It (hopefully) shows that we're evaluating work/colors (the whole point of the site, I think).

It doesn't make much sense to give point to faving and voting because I always vote when I fave.
-- Maybe you're looking at this differently than me. If I "Favorite" I vote, but just because I vote, does NOT mean I always "Favorite." My "Favorites" are exactly that, "MY" favorites. I can still critique art/design/colors/etc without them being my own personal favorites. I hope we all can. (Just like I can watch American Idol and decide who I think sings the best - even if they don't sing my personal genre peference.)

-- Maybe to vote, you should "HAVE TO" leave a comment???

-- Maybe I'm the odd one out then, but am I really? Hmmm... I guess this dicussion is to see what other users do.

I dunno. If I see something that catches my eye, I'll go look at it. If I like it, I favorite and vote on it. Sometimes (mainly if I can think of something to say) I'll add a comment. Personally, I love comments. It's just awesome to log in and see that you have love notes, and that people have commented on your work. :D I view comments as kinda the ultimate 'I love your palette' thing, if you really love it, you just have to leave a comment. Maybe that's only me, but that's the way I see it. It's a lot easier just to fav it and leave, so if someone leaves a comment, it means more to me. And of course favorites matter too. ;)

my system:
this is my system:

i do not keep track... no time & who really cares. it's not that serious. no offense if you do... all the more power to you... if you have that time. fair is fair.... =)

i don't generally vote unless i think it's worthy of 4 or 5 stars. to be honest, when i do vote, it's probably a 5 90% of the time. more like, all or nothing. i do keep a list of my top - all time favorite on my main page & i'm trying to make it a habit (only going on my third 1st of the month here), each month after the first to re-vote on those.

i comment more often than vote.... sometimes i don't necessarily like it, but it reminds me of something not mentioned, so i like to mention it.

favorite is the highest ranking you can get from me & more rare - even though it is only worth 1 pt.... it is permanent. favorite to me, means i love it & want to easily be able to find it again... maybe for a future project. also, i do favorite my own work - not all - just my favorites as i would anyone else. (i've heard people complain about this - favoriting your own. again, i do to keep track for personal preferences.)

so, if i comment or vote, i haven't necessarily done the other two options, but if i favorite it, i have definitely done both of the other two options. kind of like the a cherry to top off the cake. see, i'm not 1 of the lazy ones.... =P

I've always thought that favouriting something should count for more than anything else, as for me, its the biggest compliment I can give to want to save it for future inspiration. Perhaps there would be no perfect method to weigh things as all colourlovers use the site differently. I'm sure it varies whether a comment, a rating or favouriting a palette has more personal significance, just like it varies how much people use the social aspects of the site.

For instance when it comes to thanking people for commenting or favouriting one of your palettes by commenting on their profiles and posting the badge, this seems to be common practice but when I do I always feel like I'm schmoozing, and I'd rather let the palettes speak for themselves and not shove them onto other peoples space. So I rarely comment in peoples profiles, which probably affects me negatively as I'm not seen as friendly or social. On the flip side, I don't see it as any kind of negative when someone posts their palette in my profile, provided its not just spam!
