No Love For Theiving Spammers

COLOURlovers is very much my baby. I've put 2 years and hundreds of hours of my life into building this home for color lovers, but recently our home has been broken into and it saddens me. Somehow our server was compromised and some of the member's emails were stolen and are now being spammed heavily. (My personal email included.)
We are working hard to figure out how this happened and have taken several steps to make sure this will never happen again. We think the spammer may have got in through a hole in WordPress and we've patched everything known as a vulnerability. I sincerely apologize to anyone who is now receiving extra spam because of this leak, and I want to assure you that we would never give out or sell your personal information. I hope you continue to enjoy making love with color. Cheers, -Darius Creator & Executive Editor ![]() ![]() ![]() Bambina Bambina wrote: 26 May, 2007

Now I know why I won the Nigerian lottery 10 times last week. Also there seems to be some horrible disease that only affects Nigerian bank managers.
Bummer about the infiltration, dude. ![]() ![]() ![]() COLOURlov… COLOURlover wrote: 26 May, 2007

P.S. I know for most of us this is just a big pain...
But, if you are seriously adversely affected because of these guys stealing the emails, please let me know and I'll try and do what ever I can to remedy the problem for you. ![]() ![]() ![]() Phreestyl… Phreestyle wrote: 29 May, 2007
Most seem to stem from the UK (tiscali). I just report them to abuse@tiscali.com and they shut them down- hopefully the spammers lose their months rental and have to have the hassle of opening more accounts.
That's what i tell myself anyway ![]() ![]() ![]() imaginis imaginis wrote: 29 May, 2007
c'mon, we all need a "good laugh" after hours and hours of looking at colors that some time, damn, just seem not to work together....
actually some of the stories (Nigerian dying people, Russian dying grandmothers etc.) are quite entertaining. I substituted the smoke break with the "delete the spam" break, at least is cancer free... :-) We know it is something that can happen, at least now the spam emails are in such great number that deleting them gives you a feeling of accomplishment when your inbox is finally clean!!! cheers consuelo ![]()

The tidal wave of spam seems to be receding.
Perhaps they've found a cure for the 'Mysterious Nigerian Bank Manager Disease' (MNBMD). If I were a bank manager, I would have been getting a bit worried in case I caught it. ![]()

Bummer! Thanks for letting us know. I guess one is tempted to be jovial about it all but it really does destroy productivity, steals bandwith, and often forces people that have no idea their accounts are being used to have to change their addresses, etc. We don't let much touch our machines anymore and probably filter everything too much at the host server level but....
I used to use Mailwasher. It is free. It sits between your mail server and your personal machine and you can use it to bounce back messages (in theory causing the sender to think they have a bad address), add them to a pass through list or a banned one, etc. before anything gets on your own harddrive. It adds a step but was worth it. I think they join forces and compile lists of spammers too. Also check to see if your State's attorney general is keeping a list of spammers. I know the US Federal government (and others are trying) and can use support. Maybe a few more hefty prosecutions will help? Wishful thinking perhaps. ![]() ![]() |
