I've seen some really pretty block-blends, but I (being fairly new to CL) have no idea how to make them. Any tips?

I think the most useful tool for block blends is http://pourpre.com/chromograf/en/. There is a conversation/game at Block Blends that has lots of really great blends and the instructions for that site on the first page.
