This is probably a sensitive subject, but if you have opinions please voice them.
Out of curiosity I began to keep track of the people who never give votes. They comment and favor work, but never vote on it. My list is rather long. And it seems like people are voting less and less all the time. I guess it bothers me because it is so easy to offer a vote at the same time you comment. It sends a message that someone else's work was worth looking at. And I think everyone likes to know their work is appreciated. I can't bring myself to vote for the work these people do, even if I like it. And that is really hard for me. But if they don't believe in the system, why force it on them? If I comment on their work and do not vote it makes me look like a non voter as well. So I mostly pass these people by. Even when their work is excellent. To me voting is the very spirit of CL. And the CL system relies on voting as a way of rating accounts. So I am naturally curious why some people don't do it. Does it go against their morals? Is it too much trouble? Do they think it is unimportant? Voter or non voter I would love to hear what others think of this. Mostly to satisfy my own curiosity. And do you think people should vote regardless of whether or not the other person does? Thank you. ![]() ![]() ![]() onebreath onebreath wrote: 2 Feb, 2008

I don't think you can force anyone to vote for palettes or colours. But seeing as how they did leave a comment or add the palette to their favourites, perhaps be pleased to know that it caught their attention for a bit?
After all, it is an action that lovers can choose to take. There could be a number of reasons as to why lovers don't vote but leave comments instead. Perhaps they are picky about what they vote for? Or maybe the palette was good enough to comment on but wasn't so impressive as to get their vote. To some lovers, it could be that your palette is merely just that - a palette. They might not think about upsetting or offending the creator of the palette. To them, it's just a set of colours. There are so many more reasons! But these are the ones I could think of for now... Not voting for someone else's palette simply because they don't vote for yours seems rather petty to me. I don't think palettes should be penalized and unloved because of who they belong to. Forget about that long list of people who don't vote and just share some colour love! :) ![]() ![]() ![]() yaoisoup yaoisoup wrote: 2 Feb, 2008
I don't know, if I like it enough, I'll vote for it. I hardly ever click on anything I don't like though. Wait, don't votes get reset every month?
I think its the view count that ought to be watched, since hardly anyone clicks on palettes they don't like right? If the palette/colour manages to capture someone's attention long enough for them to click on it, then it has served its purpose I think. Doesn't matter if they didn't favourite it or vote for it or whatever because they liked it enough to click on it. That's enough appreciation for me. :) But that's just me though. ![]() ![]() ![]() eighthmus… eighthmuse wrote: 2 Feb, 2008
I personally always vote if I comment or fave it—sometimes I'll vote a less-than-five if I don't want to make a lukewarm comment but just don't honestly like it all that much. However, it seems to me that I'm being so petty doing that, so now I only vote if I am favourably inclined to whatever it is. ^^
I often forget to vote, though, so I'll close a tab, panic, and then have to open it back up again to make sure I vote. I just feel that since I would love for people to vote everytime they see my palette/pattern, I should only do the same. It does irritate me a bit when people favourite but don't vote; I can understand that some people don't like making comments, but voting is quite simple. But then again, favouriting is just another way to show love, right? Commenting, voting, favouriting . . . I'm not sure if I really pay attention to pageviews. ![]() ![]() ![]() Sylke Sylke wrote: 2 Feb, 2008
I think I am the opposite of what Twinklevango describes, I almost always rate a palette when I opened it as it caught my eye in the first place. I don't necessarily comment or even favourite the palette, so quite a lot of people don't know that I love their stuff, but favouriting for me is for the very, very special palettes - and there are already too many in my list. Comments I'll do when I have something to say. I also find it a bit sad when people forget to rate mine or other people's palettes but I am happy when I get a person favouriting or even better commenting on my stuff! I'm just telling myself, it's not a perfect world and every body has a different degree of attentiveness to these things. :) ![]() ![]() ![]() bunigrl33 bunigrl33 wrote: 2 Feb, 2008
I vote more often than I fave things, and I fave more often than I comment. Just remember that the votes reset every month, so a palette that's been around for a while may have lots of comments, views and lovers, but low votes because not everyone is able (or wants to) re-vote every month. Just for an example, I have 38 pages of favorite palettes; it's impossible to re-vote for them all and keep up on what's new, so I only re-love a few that I think are extra-special. ![]() ![]() ![]() Carrie-sa… Carrie-san wrote: 2 Feb, 2008
I usually vote when I fav stuff and when I comment, but not always. I always try to at least comment when I fav, though. Actually, I'd prefer people to comment rather than vote so I can hear what they liked or didn't like about it, rather than just get a rating. Feedback is wonderful. (though I still get alot of the simple "awesome!" or whatever type of comments. Even those are nice, though.)
When I don't vote, It's usually because I don't quite know how to classify it. Is it a 4? A 5? I can't tell. It's hard for me to put my feelings towards them in a number form, a lot of the time. I wish that we could do half-hearts in our votes.for things that are in between.. :d Maybe I'm just indecisive. I always have trouble figuring what numbers to go with. ![]() ![]() ![]() fleshy fleshy wrote: 2 Feb, 2008

The only thing, though, is that I (and, I suspect, a few other people) really might not want to say anything remotely negative. I could say 'I think the green's a little off' or 'perhaps make that yellow less saturated', but you never know if people will explode in your face.
For example: I've given up on critiquing writing over the internet and now do so only for my fellow writer friends. People over the internet, I've noticed, tend to get abnormally sensitive to criticism. On several forums dedicated to writing I've left comments and gotten harsh replies, although I would like to think I was being more helpful than snide. So, Carrie-san, I'm afraid that I'll never be too helpful in certain regards. ^^ I'll compliment lavishly, though! ![]() ![]() ![]() velveteen velveteen wrote: 2 Feb, 2008
I always vote... it's quick and easy! I don't always vote 5, but I always vote. If I click on something, I vote for it. Sometimes I don't have time to leave a comment and not every palette deserves to be favorited, but voting... it takes half a second. I never understood why someone would click on my palette, take the time to comment, or the initiative to favorite, but not the half a second to vote for it... leaving it at the score it was before they even looked at it. ![]() ![]() ![]() evilfairi… evilfairies wrote: 3 Feb, 2008
I've noticed that as well... I don't know if I'd be classified as a voter or a non-voter, but when I leave a message, I often forget to vote as well because the act of voting is so easy to overlook. From now on I'll try to vote first so it always gets done <3 ![]() ![]() ![]() lizcrimso… lizcrimson wrote: 3 Feb, 2008

and i am at fault on this issue myself, but i don't see people voting on colours much anymore. i used to always vote on colours i used in palettes. i figured if i liked it enough to use it, it deserved a vote. i have become slack on this because my computer is sometimes so slow that each time i click a colour it takes forever to load it. i still try to vote on them, though. ![]() ![]() ![]() tensaifac… tensaiface wrote: 3 Feb, 2008
I've been trying to be more attentive with voting. For me, almost any palette or pattern that strikes my fancy gets favourited (I'm a little more particular with colours - not sure why), and if I have the time, or I'm not multitasking, I'll usually leave a comment, as well. For some reason, though, I rarely vote, and since I've found how important it is (not only to people, but to the rating system of the site itself), I've been doing my best to vote honestly on every palette I click on. :D
On a somewhat related note, do any of you ever vote on your own palettes just after making them? I feel like I've noticed some people who do, and I wonder why. Does it really make a difference if you're only boosting your own rating? Though I suppose if you want a palette of your own that you're fond of to be seen, that would be the way to go.... ![]() ![]() ![]() teleute teleute wrote: 3 Feb, 2008
Nine times out of ten if I favorite a palette/pattern, I will vote on it. Eight times out of ten if I comment I would vote.
Why do I sometimes not vote? Simple - I might favourite/comment your palette or pattern because I think there's something interesting there or I love the blend of 3 of the colours, but I might not 100% love the entire thing. If I'm going to vote I'll vote high, unless you have so many votes that my dislike does not have an entirely disproportionate effect on your score. You might be sitting on a 9, but you've put the world's most hideous pink in there. Now I KNOW I have an irrational dislike of the colour pink, so it's hardly fair for me to then trash your rating! : ) If I went round voting on all the pink palettes it would be as horrible for all the pink lovers as if all the green haters voted on mine! Personally I love comments, because I can easily keep track of them. I feel bad when I've missed someone favoriting something and I've not thanked them. So I'd love a way of tracking that as well. I agree though it's kinda sad when you see something hasn't been voted on a lot (though how you remember who in particular didn't do it twinklevango is a bit beyond me! : ) ) so I'd like to see more voting. The times I have worked out who didn't vote, hasn't made ANY difference to whether I'd vote for them. Actually what I would like is people who DO score things low to leave a comment telling me WHY they thought it was a 1. Like this one, what did voter number 2 hate so much? Drives me mad not knowing! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() velveteen velveteen wrote: 3 Feb, 2008
oh good point liz. I, too, vote on all the colours I use in a palette that aren't mine, and I post the palette badge and thank them for creating a colour that I liked enough to use. I want to help colours I like make it to the top and what better or easier way than by voting? ![]() ![]() ![]() yaoisoup yaoisoup wrote: 4 Feb, 2008

I don't understand having such a negative opinion of a palette that it deserves a "1" but not bothering with a constructive comment. I've never actually given a palette less than a 5... I figure if you catch my eye, make me think about a color in a new way, present colors in an interesting arrangement, etc. then you deserve my full appreciation. If not, I move along. My favorite thing about this site is the overwhelmingly positive, encouraging atmosphere, and I don't want to mess that up just because I don't quite "get" another Lover's vision. ![]() ![]() ![]() Libbywalt… Libbywalters wrote: 4 Feb, 2008
Great subject an while I think you can't force people into commenting or voting, or faving, or doing all 3 at once. I think there is a certain ettiquette that people might want to think about. You are encourage to interact, comment, and or make a conastructive critique. After all That is what the site is all about. Otherwise there would be no reason to have built interaction into the design.
This should be a positive experience for everyone. Anyone who comments on something I did I try to always return the favor. I look at there stuff and anything that catches my eye I follow a set of general principle rules which are. 1. If I 5 star it I favorite it. It only makes sense that if its worth 5 stars then its worthy of a fav. 2. If I star something I comment on it. The reason being is that I like to let people know why I felt the need to star their work. 3. I've never starred a palette a one because if I I think its that bad I don't bother. If you do score a palette as a one you should comment on why. People deserve to know. A feature I would like to see is a required field for scoring a 1. This would eliminate or atleast keep down the number of malicious 1 votes, since you could no longer remain anonymous. 4. The other reason I always comment is because then people will get notified when I score their palette and the reason why. Every so often I'll just score and fav, sometimes on colors, because I just really like the color but don't have anything to say about it. but even if you fav and score the user doesn't get the notification. A nice little who faved your palettes today application would be a great way to keep people notified of who is scoring and visiting their page. Could you image if everyone on the site went by the principles above? I've noticed a few things I'm a little disappointed in. I seem to get more comments and votes at the beginning of the month, but not as many at the end. This may reflect from people not wanting to vote for a palette that is ahead of theirs in ratings. Or perhaps they are not as motivated to rate since it's so close to the end of the month. It shouldn't be about competition but more a community as we all feed off and inspire each other. I was also disappointed recently when I went page by page on my friends list and commented on atleast one thing on each of my friends pages. I wanted to see how much feedback I would recieve in return. It was less than 25 Percent. I actually got more feedback from people who were not my friends who just happened to have a new palette when I was on. So be kind to your friends, you friended them for a reason, give them some love every so often. This site depends on interaction. ![]() ![]() dostannet dostannet wrote: 5 Feb, 2008

When I first came to CL I probably rarely voted on palettes that I commented or faved because I didn't really understand the rating system at the time. I'm not sure if the list you've collected is comprised mostly of newer colourlovers or not, but that may explain some of it.
Now I usually vote on every palette that catches my eye, and it's almost always a 5. I don't really see the point of voting less than that unless you give them a reason why. Likewise, if you hate a palette completely, the best thing you can do is not vote for it at all, as voting even a 1 will increase the rank of the user and the palette. ![]() ![]() ![]() Just Perf… Just Perfect Color wrote: 2 Months Ago
I happen to think people take the voting thing too seriously and it is harmful to some when people go on the attack or rally their friends to inflate something. I do vote. But I must say, I much prefer the comments because they show someone really did like the palettes, patterns, etc. I would encourage voting as a casual way to critique things but take the time to comment if you really like something. ![]() ![]() ![]() retsof retsof wrote: 2 Months Ago
If I start a blend series, it will get a lot of "1" votes. Some people hate them. I have even seen them go through the blends group one by one, dinging all that they find. My blends that were not yet part of the group were not touched. I also have some special palettes and patterns at the top of my profile. One morning, they all had received "1" votes. Zero is better in those cases. Several of us gang up on "1" palettes and vote them up. It is not as obvious now as votes are wiped each month. ![]() ![]() ![]() GreenMyEy… GreenMyEyes wrote: 2 Months Ago
