Please read the title of this thread.
Has it got ANYthing to do with your issue?
No? Then this is not the place for it.

Does anyone remember exactly when spam started to become a real issue on the site?

Well, I have gone through my creations and old love notes a bit to establish a timeline.

I joined in August 2015, but only really started creating in October, and there was no big spammer problem then at all.
From the creation dates of many fake accounts that I have posted here made with one of these hilarious profile-generators, a lot of them were on CL at that time, but their spamming was/is restricted to having their links in their profile, then leaving comments on creations, loving creations and following users, so they are relatively low-key.

But starting in November I think, we were getting huge amounts of mostly template-hijackers.
All our new templates were being abused in wave after wave of greyscale "patterns", causing a lot of template makers to slap an "All rights reserved"-license on their templates for a while. After a brief period of relative calm, there was a second huge influx of them in January 2016.

And since then really, we have never not had a spam problem. Sure, there were peaks and lows, and the manner of spam changed a lot.

Last summer I think the main problem were the "Download..." and "Read..." and "Watch..."-palette spammers, with illegal download links in the palette description, and these spammers usually made lots of palettes before they abandoned an account.

These days, we mostly have the skin care, male enhancement and all that stuff, who normally only make one or just a few palettes before they move on to the next account.
And another thing I noticed is, we are getting a lot more spam for what appear to be legitimate businesses, who have handed off their internet PR to companies who employ spammer tactics. From pool-cleaning to cutlery, flower shops to wedding dresses, it's all there.

Of course, these have always been here in the background, but not in such high numbers as now, in addition to the illegal drugs, downloads and whatnot that one would usually associate with spammers.
These businesses usually only have an account, and in their profile describe their services. Many of them do not create anything or seek contact to other users via comments.

But anyway, in conclusion, spam has been a real problem here since November 2015.

All, we are sorry for the slow site issues lately. We have been getting a very heavy server load which we suspect is a "Denial of Service" attack. We've been blocking the incoming IP addresses as fast as we can but they continually change their IPs to get around our circumvention. I am working on a solution that will automatically detect and blacklist them so this problem will go away when that is complete.
