Tears of the Black Tiger (Fah talai jone) - Inspiration

Tears of the Black Tiger (Fah talai jone) - Inspiration

In every sense of the word, Tears of the Black Tiger (Fah talai jone) very well could be the most colorful film ever created.

With its loud acting style, exuberant sets and stunning shots in pastel colours, this Thai cult film is as much a parody as an homage to the Western and the romantic tearjerker.

Color Crazed Hair Crazies

Color Crazed Hair Crazies

The fearless, color obsessed folks at Hair Crazy display their love for color conspicuously on top of their heads, and are leading the way for color expression on the fringe.

Even if you're not all about alternative, extreme, unnatural hair colors, and you're not about to walk into the office with Napalm Orange hair, the community provides information about all sorts of hair dyeing matters, such as: application techniques, styling guides, informational how-to's, as well as product (hair dye) reviews, and various other tips & tricks. Information any hair chameleon, natural or not, might find useful. Of course, if you are ready to make the eccentric leap to 'super colorful', then this is definitely the place to visit. You people might want to start with the member photo timelines or the gallery organized by color to find inspiration of the possibilities, devour the beginner guides then order yourself some hair dye.

You can check out the community's boldest and brightest hair colors and palettes in their hair color hall of fame, and keep up with the founder, Jude, as she works her way through every color combination she can think of on her willing test subject Adam.

Finally, for those who are perfectly happy with their natural brunette hair and wouldn't think of becoming a 'bluenette', the community offers plenty of old fashioned color inspiration for other applications. Here are few images from Adam's adventures and the most recent roundup of hair color hall of famers for color inspiration.

Silencing - New Visual Illusion

Silencing - New Visual Illusion

Silencing is a new illusion that shows it's hard to notice when moving objects change.

Cambridge, MA – Scientists at Harvard have found that people are remarkably bad at noticing when moving objects change in brightness, color, size, or shape. In a paper published in Current Biology, the researchers present a new visual illusion that "causes objects that had once been obviously dynamic to suddenly appear static," and that "demonstrates the tight coupling of motion and object appearance." The results have implications for everything from video game design to the training of pilots. Several videos demonstrating this striking effect can be found here.

SILENCING demonstrates the tight coupling of motion and object appearance. Simply by changing the retinotopic coordinates—moving the object or the eyes—it is possible to silence awareness of visual change, causing objects that had once been obviously dynamic to suddenly appear static.

Color Changes

Instructions: Play the movie while looking at the small white speck in the center of the ring. At first, the ring is motionless and it's easy to tell that the dots are changing color. When the ring begins to rotate, the dots suddenly appear to stop changing. But in reality they are changing the entire time. Take a look.

Cocktail Colors Seen Through the Microscope

Cocktail Colors Seen Through the Microscope

Photographs of cocktails through the microscope... Mixing up our perspective on our favorite cocktails, the photomicrography work of Michael Davidson shows different types of liquor and mixed drinks magnified over 1,000 times. His work has found a place in the "bar art" world selling prints through the company BevShots, and thanks to @spigumus and this Daily Mail article we find some interesting color compositions.

BevShot images are made by first crystallizing the drink of choice on a lab slide. Using a standard light microscope with a camera attached, the light source is polarized and passed through the crystal. This creates the colors we see featured.

Here's a Way on Wednesday: Painting Dots the Easy Way

Here's a Way on Wednesday: Painting Dots the Easy Way

DOT: A tiny round mark made by or as if by a pointed instrument; a spot. - thefreedictionary.com

This is such a simple method that I always think everyone already knows how to do it, but I think that's just me, who comes from a crafty background. Growing up we were constantly exposed to art, painting and crafts of many variety so things like this come by second nature without a thought. But then the thought did come to me that some of you may not realize how fast and easy a project can be when you're adding painted dots - which you might be dreading. Dread no more!

MEMBERlove: Wordlinks Color Game

MEMBERlove: Wordlinks Color Game

Have you ever seen a [w] tag in a palette's name and wonder what is was? It's wordlinks, a fantastic game and creative exercise! Take a look at the description by praxicalidocious in the latest recruitment post for the game:

There is a delightful game here on CL, so delightful, in fact, that it has it's own dedicated group, wordlinks. (You might have seen a [w] palette tag, and wondered what it meant.)

Wordlinks are palettes where each colour is a part of a 'chain'; the name of each colour begins with the last word of the previous colour. Like so, since I can let badges do all the work:

[w]_Whisked_Her_Awaycreamed_brown_darkdark_apricotApricot_BlushBlushing_Bridebride_of_the_wind

...You see? (If you're more ambitious, and are lucky with the first colour (which is always the last colour from the previous palette in the chain; please try to keep this in mind when choosing your own final colour, to allow others a good starting point), the power of the word doubling lends tremendous dramatic weight to your 'scenelets'. (In [w], irony is always delicious!)

DIY Coffee Filter Pom-Pom's Revisited: Assembling

DIY Coffee Filter Pom-Pom's Revisited: Assembling

Back when I did this original post Reception Tent DIY: Coffee Filter Pom-Pom How-to, I had promised some pictures of the pom-pom's at the wedding. Unfortunately, the lighting at the time when we did setup and had time to take our own pictures, was a little sharp. These were the dreadful tents we had to work with, but it worked out.

The reason for the revisit is that I had many many people contact me via COLOURlovers, facebook and twitter for more detailed information to assemble these things. I dumbed it down and made a process that worked great and pretty efficient I must add. I have omitted the details of dying the filters (to add colour) because that's something in itself and was covered a bit in the last post. I will also do an immediate follow-up post on different variations on what I found worked, to add colour to the pom-pom's.

Getting the Scrunch Right.

Trust me when I say that this step matters. Prepping your filters for scrunch is highly important as they will just turn in to floppy filters within an hour (or less) after ONLY hand scrunching. I spent an entire afternoon with trial and error to nail down the best method for best final results in the most time-efficient manner.

DIY Ornament Roundup: Top 5

DIY Ornament Roundup: Top 5

Are the kiddos are at home and in need of entertainment? - making ornaments is a fun way to spend time together. Get involved as a family, turn on some holiday tunes and have some creative time. If your tree is getting too full of ornaments, I'm sure Grandma & Grandpa and Aunties & Uncles would love some for their tree's too!

#1: Half Eaten Gingerbread Men

Peppermint_Candy

I first came across this ornament design by Noodle-Head.com "Half Eaten Ornaments". I love this take on making Gingerbread Man ornaments with a laughable approach. These will definitely be on my list for next years projects. One of the simple details here is using a red button with white yarn/string to make them look like peppermint candies. Genius! Original pattern by Elsie Marley here.
