The rhyme is not present in any of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century collections published in Britain. I can't believe you've never heard of Peter, Peter Pumpkin Eater! It's one of favorites. At Story Land amusement park in New Hamphire, I got to go into the Pumpkin house and Peter's wife greeted me and welcomed me to her home. Those are some good memories of my childhood.
