Inspiration - 'Snow Blind' by Matthias Heiderich

Sparse contrasting colors add depth to these stunning yet stark and bleak winter scenes.  Stark and bleak are not words many associate with things of beauty but when they describe a certain emptiness and stillness, such as the photos in 'Snow Blind' do, one's mind can wander to the potential such emptiness holds.

Matthias Heiderich is a Berlin based photographer whose work often explores the complexities of color. He is represented be Spot Galerie Berlin, and also works with WeirdAndWired a "netlabel for weird electronic music." His work (recommended: White Noise' & 'Color Berlin') can also be seen on BehanceFlickr.

Etsy Color Love - Blush

Etsy Color Love - Blush

Bright sun, rich florals and saturated grasses can easily dull and washout any blush tone, but place these soft, delicate colors against a stark white and grey winter backdrop and you have something brilliant and beautiful. Winter is the perfect season for blush.

This curated set from Etsy member sweptfromthesea includes a wonderful selection of blush colored items from Etsy. We repost it here for color inspiration and to showcase the great color work you can find in the greater color & design community.

Silencing - New Visual Illusion

Silencing - New Visual Illusion

Silencing is a new illusion that shows it's hard to notice when moving objects change.

Cambridge, MA – Scientists at Harvard have found that people are remarkably bad at noticing when moving objects change in brightness, color, size, or shape. In a paper published in Current Biology, the researchers present a new visual illusion that "causes objects that had once been obviously dynamic to suddenly appear static," and that "demonstrates the tight coupling of motion and object appearance." The results have implications for everything from video game design to the training of pilots. Several videos demonstrating this striking effect can be found here.

SILENCING demonstrates the tight coupling of motion and object appearance. Simply by changing the retinotopic coordinates—moving the object or the eyes—it is possible to silence awareness of visual change, causing objects that had once been obviously dynamic to suddenly appear static.

Color Changes

Instructions: Play the movie while looking at the small white speck in the center of the ring. At first, the ring is motionless and it's easy to tell that the dots are changing color. When the ring begins to rotate, the dots suddenly appear to stop changing. But in reality they are changing the entire time. Take a look.

Cocktail Colors Seen Through the Microscope

Cocktail Colors Seen Through the Microscope

Photographs of cocktails through the microscope... Mixing up our perspective on our favorite cocktails, the photomicrography work of Michael Davidson shows different types of liquor and mixed drinks magnified over 1,000 times. His work has found a place in the "bar art" world selling prints through the company BevShots, and thanks to @spigumus and this Daily Mail article we find some interesting color compositions.

BevShot images are made by first crystallizing the drink of choice on a lab slide. Using a standard light microscope with a camera attached, the light source is polarized and passed through the crystal. This creates the colors we see featured.

Inspiration: The Last Range of Colours by Miles Aldridge

The Last Range of Colours by Miles Aldridge was shot for Vogue Italia back in 2007. These playful, ultra saturated photos are quite fun despite the confused, uninterested, insensate, comatose, insensible looks of the models--all great adjectives, and pretty much the complete opposite of any that would be used to describe these colors.

2010 Color Trends | Business

2010 Color Trends | Business

Inc. Magazine's "Break Out Companies of 2010" provided the perfect look back at some of the color trends in business last year. Here we break down each company's logo and web design into palettes that capture their overall color identity. Overwhelmingly, the colors these companies use are Red, Blue or a combination of Blue & Green.

Many more factors than simply color drive the success of these companies, but in the digital age when customers interact with company's products, services and websites daily, multiple times a day, and in some cases, constantly, color & design make up both the first impression and the lasting test of usability and environment (feel).

The true test for these companies will be in the coming years as competitors enter the market and technology evolves. Will these blues, greens and reds hold their place or will companies have to evolve their identities and change their color scheme to fit with the changing times.  Will future companies follow their lead and the lead of The Most Powerful Colors in the World or will they try to set themselves apart with surprising and unexpected color schemes to match the novel and exciting products and services that they are bound to create.

MEMBERlove: Wordlinks Color Game

MEMBERlove: Wordlinks Color Game

Have you ever seen a [w] tag in a palette's name and wonder what is was? It's wordlinks, a fantastic game and creative exercise! Take a look at the description by praxicalidocious in the latest recruitment post for the game:

There is a delightful game here on CL, so delightful, in fact, that it has it's own dedicated group, wordlinks. (You might have seen a [w] palette tag, and wondered what it meant.)

Wordlinks are palettes where each colour is a part of a 'chain'; the name of each colour begins with the last word of the previous colour. Like so, since I can let badges do all the work:

[w]_Whisked_Her_Awaycreamed_brown_darkdark_apricotApricot_BlushBlushing_Bridebride_of_the_wind

...You see? (If you're more ambitious, and are lucky with the first colour (which is always the last colour from the previous palette in the chain; please try to keep this in mind when choosing your own final colour, to allow others a good starting point), the power of the word doubling lends tremendous dramatic weight to your 'scenelets'. (In [w], irony is always delicious!)

Carnovsky's RGB Wallpaper

Carnovsky's RGB Wallpaper

Color est e pluribus unus

RGB is a work about the exploration of the “surface’s deepness”. The designs create surfaces that mutate and interact with different chromatic stimulus. The technique consists in the overlapping of three different images, each one in a primary color. The resulting images from this three level’s superimposition are unexpected and disorienting. The colors mix up, the lines and shapes entwine becoming oneiric and not completely clear. Through a colored filter (a light or a transparent material) it is possible to see clearly the layers in which the image is composed. The filter’s colors are red, green and blue, each one of them serves to reveal one of the three layers. - Carnovsky = Francesco Rugi + Silvia Quintanilla

From Johanssen-Gallery:

“Color est e pluribus unus” is a famous Virgil phrase taken from his poem “Moretum” and describes the blending of colors into one. Having that in mind, Francesco Rugi and Silvia Quintanilla, the names behind Milan based collective "Carnovsky", got inspired and created for Jannelli & Volpi, the famous Italian wallpaper brand, a very special series of wallpapers named RGB.
