There are of course infinite amounts of colours, and a color wheel can be divided endlessly.
- Find the right ‘heat’ for your website
There are two main categories in the color wheel: the warm colors, revolving around red, orange and yellow, and the cool colors, revolving around blue, green and purple. When choosing which family of colors to go for on your website, consider the effect you want to achieve. Generally, warm colors are more stimulating, suggesting vigor and vitality, whereas cool colors are more peaceful and soothing. It all depends on the kind of impression you want to create in your visitors’ minds, as well as on your type of business. For example, a restaurant is more likely to go for hot hues to whet the appetite, whereas a law firm will prefer cooler tones to build trust.

- The Color Triad: Take any three colors on the wheel that are of an equal distance from each other, forming a perfect equilateral triangle. Create combinations such as purple, yellow-orange and blue-green, or red, yellow and blue. These colors used together on a design can be very vibrant, so consider creating a balance by choosing one to be the most dominant and the others to support, using them for example on your navigation menu or any other small detail.
- The Split Complementary Scheme: A drop of trigonometry - choose one color and then add the two colors that sit right next to its complementary color (creating an isosceles triangle). Possible combinations here would be red, yellow-green and blue-green, or purple, yellow-orange and yellow-green. This formula offers a refined contrast, creating a slightly less bold look than the complementary one.
- Put theory into practice
Now that you’ve chosen the palette, you need to figure out how much of each color to use. Find the right ratio with the ‘60-30-10’ rule. On each page of your site, use 60% of your primary color, 30% of your secondary color and 10% of your accent color. In most cases, your primary color will fill your website’s background, whereas the secondary will appear in the images and texts. 6. Keep it clean and organized
Your visitors should feel at home on your website. This means that you want it to be as organized as possible. Think about hierarchy here. Indeed, studies have shown that when looking at a page, we tend to start from the top left, then our eyes move right and down, following an “F” or “Z” shape.
You also want your website to look clean. Whether you’re using a grid or any other type of layout, leave space between elements to create a sense of breathing. A border around the edges of the screen is also a must, especially in mobile design. Ensure your site looks professional by repeating the same space in all areas, as well as aligning elements to one another to avoid disorder.
7. Show your two colors

It's not so easy to design a good logo, is it? Sometimes we struggle to come up with a good idea. Sometimes we make a mistake from the start and the end result is not even close to what the client had in mind for his brand. The whole creative process can be very frustrating at times, but there are a couple of steps to it that can help us design better logos that perfectly represent the brand.
We asked Konstantina Gavala to explain what it takes to design a good logo. As an example, she used the process of making the logo of their company.

This is the moodboard I made for Yellow Studio. It's a graphic representation of things we realized during the briefing process this brand should be about. A creative interpretation of the brief, the moodboard's use is to explain words through images. It is one of the most difficult, but also the most creative of processes we use.
Sketching and designing
After finishing with the análisis of the brand´s goals with both words and images, we start sketching different ideas for the logo. It is very important for us to start this process with pencil/ pen and paper before concluding on a specific design and creating the digital and final archive in Illustrator. We always make sure that the final design works perfectly with bright and dark backgrounds by either choosing a colour that works well with everything or creating the logo´s negative. For our brand, I chose to create a graphic logo, one that has a yellow background and no transparency behind the name.

So, now that we understand why residencies are important, let us explore some residencies that are available for young and emerging artists in 2018.
Cosm offers a retreat to musicians, dancers, performance artists, and painters. A residency at Cosm does not require any educational or experiential prerequisites. However, a letter of intention and the purpose of the consultation are requested in advance. This retreat is at Alex Grey’s Chapel of Sacred Mirrors in the guest retreat room. There are several options available from one night to weeklong retreats, and even longer if you wish. The residency includes a consultation about career development, style, technique, and philosophy. Prices range from $500 - $1450.
Screen-printing, etching, relief printing, sewing, photography, and business courses are all offered at Studio Two Three. This residency is open to all skill levels and you will work alongside other artists in a working studio located in Richmond, Virginia.
This retreat is for artists that would like to work on their craft while in a renewing setting at the Yasodhara Ashram in Canada. The fee is only $50 and the minimum stay is one week (two weeks is recommended). During your stay, you will need to donate two hours per day of your time to the ashram. Meals and yoga classes are provided free during your stay as part of the residency.
Located on a farm 30 miles North of New York City, the art space at Stony Point Center is a 4000 sq. ft. two-story facility with a loft, overlooking a chicken coop and vegetable gardens. The artist-in-residence duties consist of managing the art space, facilitating lectures, and organizing classes. Residencies are 3-6 months long and a donation of one painting is required.

Then, any change would require bugging the web designer, even if it was just updating the year in the footer. (Speaking of which, this is a free reminder to update all your footers for 2018! No need to thank me.) Luckily, today there are various web-development platforms that allow you to create a website, even if you haven't typed a single line of code in your entire life. Since your website visitors don’t have the time to explore it in its full glory, you need to arrange the content wisely, following the rules of visual hierarchy. Think of it as a trail of donuts: leave them where needed, and people will follow. Use colour, contrast, size and spacing to draw attention to desired sections, and make sure you’re exposing the reader to what’s most important first. Here’s an example of a generic order of appearance you might want to adopt:
- Your personal/brand name and business description (online fashion store, wedding photographer, freelance writer - that kind of a description).
- Types of services you provide + Examples of your work.
- Contact option.
Other sections will surely enrich your website, like the traditional “About me” page, client feedbacks, a blog, a newsletter subscription - just to name a few. But the reader must be intentionally led through the three most important ones listed above, according to their hierarchy. 3. Increase readability

- Make sure there’s sufficient contrast between the font and background colors.
- Keep font size at least 16pt (always have mobile screens in mind).
- Use only readable fonts for your paragraphs. “Sans serif” fonts like Arial are Internet readers’ favorites.
- Keep the ‘exotic’ fonts (like handwriting) for the titles.
- Do not mix more than two font types.

- Make sure that every piece of content is accessible within three clicks maximum.
