Meet the New COLOURlovers Overlays Pack on Pixlr!

They're here! Meet the latest design pack on Pixlr web and mobile apps - The COLOURlovers Expansion Pack!

These design ideas were the result of our awesome, COLOURlovers + Pixlr #PixlrPop Contest held at the end of May. The result was eight (8) winning entries that went to inspiration for what is referred to as, Expansion Pack Overlays on Pixlr web, desktop and mobile apps. Overlay packs generally feature unique artwork set to varied styled effects similar to those in design programs (i.e. Photoshop). This means that some of the artwork is set to modes such as: Lighten, Multiply, Soft Light, Hard Light and so on. This changes their interaction with the artwork you use.

Here is a quick example how you can use the COLOURlovers Overlays Expansion Pack with a clean portrait to create a trendy double exposure artwork. I used this beautiful black and white portrait (via Pinterest search, "Portraits") for the example images.

I highly recommend fiddling around with a clean black and white portrait when designing double exposure and/or overlay types.

As you can see these turned out pretty neat! Each style has a specific personality that really creates some terrific effects. Check it out for yourself!

PixlrCL_ExpressShot

  1. 1. Go to Pixlr Express
  2. 2. Load your own image, or go find an easy portrait to work with, the one I used is at this link. (hint: right click + "open image in a new tab" works great to not grab the page link, instead you just want the link to the image itself.
  3. 3. You'll see the little COLOURlovers icon and you can start editing!
  4. *Big Tip: Add an effect then erase sections with the History Brush, then go back and add more overlay effects....

Would you like a video tutorial? Let me know!

This is so super exciting! I love how everyone's overlays turned out!

Ah, now this is a fantastic way to incorporate the patterns - and they look great! I think more such competitions should do this "inspiration" thing.

Congrats again to the winners :)

So proud of our winners!

Played with these overlays the day they came out. Hope Autodesk keeps them in Pixlr.

I am so proud of our colour lover family members ...these turned out fantastic. I agree there should be more of these contest.

Molly,
I have a couple of ideas for a contest. One is a recipe book and the other is a Christmas Book. The recipe book could be self published by CL on Blurb, Shutterfly, and Amazon also the Christmas book too. The recipe book would be user submitted recipes a color palette and pattern for each. This kinda would be a big project as it would have to be categorized.
The christmas book simply would be a palette and pattern with a caption.

Bon Bonne

aw cheese, this is neat! too bad I missed out on that contest. mmm.
though I guess since I can't make templates right now, meh. wish I could move my old ones from my last account here.

excellent! ALL good ideas. technically it is best to work with a sponsor on contests. :) just an FYI.... internally supported and as a CL project ONLY leaves for a LOT of manual labor and little pay... to speak frankly. ;)

I am on a lot of vacation time right now everyone! Just FYI. I haven't taken off the map, but I have been doing a lot of holiday time and working on some other things I have to put my time in to currently. :D

have a great summer and I will most likely pick back up come early fall! Feel free to shoot me a message and I can most easily be reached on Facebook.com/mollybermea if you want to follow my adventures hah! :)

@ Molly Bermea...guess I never thought about being paid or making money. I tend to do a lot of pro bono projects for friends and my kids and their school activities. Most of the places I mentioned to publish are free and who ever wanted it could buy it. Many of us ( I guess I should speak for myself) have been around for a long time and we spend a lot of time together virtually per se. I just thought it would be neat to come together as a group and organize a internal project so to speak. You are right about the manual labor involved. I did a book for Symea one time that was a culmination of cats with her prints and my prints and colors. It was neat.I actually think she ended up purchasing one....It was only a suggestion as I know Colour Lovers for me is a get away and it would be stressful in some aspects to get together a book project.

I don't see how to use the eraser. There's no toolbox.

What am I doing wrong? If I try to save it and open it in Editor, the only option is to save it as a JPEG to my computer.
