The Colors Of GelaSkins: iPhone Skins + Wallpapers

Print this page Print this page

If you’re looking for a way to customize and set your iPhone apart with a little personal taste and style, you may not need to look any further than GelaSkins. Featuring some 60 artists, GelaSkins features impressive work by some amazing contemporary artists, and fills in the ranks with classic work by Van Gogh, Monet, Gustav Klimt and Kurt Vonnegut.

While I am unaware of what kind of compensation each artist receives in exchange for the rights to their work, I do like the fact that they are supporting new artists, and GelaSkins says they are always on the lookout for new talent to feature, which in addition to wallpapers and skins, includes coverage on their design + culture blog.

The new skin designs and free matching wallpapers that many companies have been coming out with lately are a pretty big jump in the right direction from older styles of skins that were mostly just awkward and annoying, and only came in a limited number of colors.

The skins are available online and in selected stores nationwide. You can also create your own skins and put whatever questionable illustration, painting, or photograph that you might have, on your iPhone for all your friends to see.

Color Inspiration from GelaSkins

Here are four works that caught my eye when I was browsing through the lineup of artist.

    Toxicity

 Artist    Alex Noriega

    Blimp Girl

 Artist    Aaron Kraten

    The Exchange

 Artist    Brian Despain

    Hill On My Head

 Artist    Silvia Stella

FAQs About Gelaskins

What are GelaSkins?

GelaSkins are a very thin (< 2mm) protective cover for your iPhone, iPod, laptop and RAZR made with premium grade 3M vinyl and adhesive technology. Patented micro-channels within the adhesive allow for a bubble-free application. Each GelaSkin has an ultra-clear, scratch resistant coating for maximum durability and photo quality finish.

I’ve got some ideas… can I submit designs for GelaSkins?

Yes. We are always looking to work with new artists. The first step is to submit a few images or a link to your gallery to design@gelaskins.com. If your work is something we feel fits with our line of artists, we’ll contact you via email.

More From Gelaskins

Since the guys at GelaSkins were nice enough to send us some samples of their product for us to test out, we approved of the skins and thought they were worth sharing with all of you.

I have one of the skins on my iPhone. I digg the artwork and the product. If I didn't approve of the quality I would never have showcased them here.

I thought this was 'colour inspiration', not shameless advertising.

Gelaskins are pretty cool, I have one for my macbook, but the colours are not really any more spectacular than any other artwork. It's fair enough if you want to get endorsement in this kind of way, but don't try to dress it up as anything else!

My dad wanted the mario one, but they didn't have it in stock.
They are cute, and awsome, but I have stickers on my phone.
:D

We need a blog on "iPhone tossing", a la camera tossing. ;-D

One comedian was griping about a woman blocking an aisle in a supermarker gabbing away on her cellphone. He grabbed and tossed it down to the other end, shouting "YOU HAVE A LONG DISTANCE PHONE CALL!!!"

Wow, such an interesting response this post received from some of you. I'm curious why this colorful product post was so negative in comparison to the others that we've showcased?

We weren't paid to showcase them. They did send us two samples so I could check them out and verify that they were indeed something worth sharing with you... but there was no guarantee that would get them a post.

I like their concept... showcasing individual artists work and giving them a chance to sell a product to the mass market, ala Threadless or Deviant Art. Some of the artwork really is amazing... I kept the skin on my iPhone because I genuinely liked the artwork.

Could you help me understand how we can share colorful products with the community in the future without creating such a visceral reaction? I added the footnote to be transparent and disclose we had received samples, so as to not be deceptive... seems that sparked some of the responses.

The skins were neat, but maybe we just hate the product. It's also hard coded to work only with AT&T, actually the old SWB, the most technologically illiterate of any of the baby bells.

I saw something on MSN today about earth landscapes as art, as seen from Landsat. Perhaps they'd like that. ;-D

I like the product and thought a post about them is appropriate enough.

This post was written like a press release for GelSkins, the other product posts were considerably more subtle and tied into CL in ways that were a little more obvious, the palettes here feel like an afterthought.

I do appreciate the sentence mentioning that they sent you samples, I think people don't understand how common it is to market this way and it caught them a few of them little off guard.

I was just asking who 'us' was because I thought evad wrote that sentence

The post read more like a commercial than a review.

These Gelaskins relate to iPhones, iPhones don't really relate to color. The connection to color is the art, not the gelaskin. So palettes based on the art itself would be great, but not based on the art as seen on a gelaskin.

Could you help me understand how we can share colorful products with the community in the future without creating such a visceral reaction?

I don't mind reading about a product here if it's directly related to color, and it's a review, not an ad. The Pantone posts were informative and useful. Maybe upcoming printer technologies, monitor calibration software/hardware comparisons. Maybe a post about environmentally friendly inks and papers. I'm particularly interested in edible paints, as I want to make a very colorful poop jar someday ;)

Otherwise the blog is generally awesome, this post just jumped out at me as a blatant advert.

Thanks for asking :)

I thought it was interesting especially as it might be a venue for my art work.

I didn't even conisder that you might have gotten an endorsement to do that. Which perhaps might get icky if it were done all the time and for scrungy products. I don't think getting some samples is much of an exchange...

Besides... I don't even see how you actually fund the site anyway! So, for me, it wouldn't be a huge deal to have a promotional endorsement now and again.

Not that it was anyway!

I actually like this post, and find the skins very appropriate to the site. The colors of the artwork are just lovely and certainly relate to colors. However this post is not as subtle as some past ones in regards to the topic of choice. I think if this post had a little more discussion about color in it, people may not of gotten so defensive twords it.

I would love to know more about the financial arrangement they have with the artists. I sent them an e-mail... I wonder if I will get a reply?

I actually enjoyed this post as it gave me the llnks (via the gelaskin site) of a whole bunch of excellent illustrators.

Amazing! I just love art like that. I really want some of those skins. It would help though if I had an iPhone. I can't choose a favorite, and wouldn't want to....gosh, I can't get over all that beauty.

I have "Super Mario with a busted eye" on the back of mine. The only thing I don't like about the gelaskin is that it leaves the sticky glue on my phone after a while.

I just registered so I could place a comment.

I thought this was a fabulous post, as always.

Those complaining about any commerciality really need to get out more. Do you pay to read this blog? Do you edit the articles, find the content or vette anything else? In fact, do you actually do anything apart from contributing to the bandwidth cost of running this website?

I doubt it.

If you don't like it go and read something else. This is a great website and I don't care what the owners do, I trust them. More please.

Aside from this one, you have not contributed any comments, palettes, faves or colors to the site.
Kindof ironic.
