In sizes ranging from the tiny hummingbird to the tall earthbound ostrich or emu, Birds of the world show us color in a huge number of arrangements -- 9,000 to 10,000 species to be more exact.
Males mostly do the more vibrant presentations to attract mates, while females are usually muted and earth tone to guard their homes and their eggs, but either way, it seems that birds of a feather have the right idea when it comes to great colors.

When we were young, my father used to breed these little colorful Mandarin ducks. So, I still have a thing going with ducks. This one was also taken last sunday at the Blijdorp zoo.

It finally dawned on Floyd the origin of his name. He remembered that unusual lullabye, "Another Brick in the Wall" that his mother used to sing to him and how she would always reassure him when the other flamingos teased him. She'd tell him, "Never be ashamed because your beak is pink, Floyd."

Our friends, the Bowers, have an ostentation of peacocks. It took me a little while to get this guy 'centered' in my viewfinder. He was so stubborn.

This is about as close as I can get to him (approx 100mm zoom about a foot from his head); I thought about cropping some of the topheaviness but decided it made him look all the more vulnerable and lovable.

If that is too much color, there's always the female black vulture, which is black. The male black vulture is also .... black.

The colours are amazing. I can't like the coloured chicks though because the dye that makes them those colours will enter their body and hurt them.
